Blue Mages are humans who have the power, for whatever unknown reason, to absorb certain kinds of spellshards from physical objects. These objects are almost always harvested from the bodies of monsters, but can occasionaly be found in other ways. These shards are also unique in that each one requires only joining to a living soul to function, each spell is complete as soon as it joins, multiple shards are not needed.
The spellshards in question are extremely easy to draw, almost viral, but they have to join with the living soul of a human being to be effetive, they cannot be encased in a Spell Matrix. Blue Magic can be very powerful, but it makes many people nervous. Once drawn into a person, that little bit of monster magic is there to stay. Blue Magic spells cannot be unlearned, like a Sorceress' power. Unlike a Sorceress, Blue Mages can be men, and do not have to pass thier power on before they die.
The potential for blue magic is quite rare, though not so rare as full Sorcery. There is speculation that the Sorceress Adel used Blue Magic, but nothing can be proven. In any case, maybe one out of a thousand persons can join themselves to Blue Magic shards. These people almost always end up in SeeD or working for some government, as they are too useful to put aside.
In SeeD, Blue Mages are support troops, and they are taught to focus on their mystic studies much more than physical fighting skill. Because of the wide variety of Blue Magic abilites, Blue Mages act as a combination of artilery and medic.
