General presentation (touristy objectives) Cheile Bicazului represents the main mountaineering objective in Romania. Thanks to the enthusiastic people, in the last years various modern climbing routes have been opened in this place, that confer to this area the title of “The most tough climbing zone” in Romania, because of the difficult routes as well as for their quality. Access The main tourist center of the Lacu Rosu area - Cheile Bicazului is the Lacu Rosu town – a start point for many tourist journeys in the Hasmas Mountains and headquarters for climbers. Lacu Rosu is situated on the national road DN 12C, that links Bicaz and Gheorghieni, road that hosts the most impressing walls of the Cheile Bicazului on an 8 km distance between Bicaz Chei village and Lacu Rosu. The access to this area can be done by car on DN 12C, as well as by train to Bicaz (coming from the East), and to Gheorghieni (coming from the West). The Climbing Cheile Bicazului are mainly made up of calcareous structure that presupposes a technical climb on washed surfaces as well as on the surplombe ones. The rock is solid and the routes can be climbed in maximum safety. The routes are cleaned equipped with tops made up of two pitches, linked by a chain and by the thick ring of a rapel. It’s necessary to use ropes of at least 50 m for a safe retreat. The present routes presuppose a climb on small prize, on glete and holes plombele work out the climber’s force as well as his capacity of anticipation. According to one’s preparation and experience you have the possibility to choose from a wide variety of routes ranging from 5+ - 10- for the surface routes and 7+ - 10, 10- on surplombante surfaces. Route Presentation Over 300 of the arranged routes (free climbing), are divided into 10 areas with easy access from the main road (max. 5 min). The main difficulty degrees are of 8-9 [6c-7c] but there is a great variety of easy routes for beginners. The largest part of the classic mountaineering routes (more than a rope’s length) can be done in free climbing, offering the climber an ascension in a special decorum. Surely in just one visit to Romania you will not be able to cover all the routes, but you will be left with the desire of coming back for other ascensions, thanks to the beauty and quality of the routes. Accommodation The accommodation possibilities are large: from hotels to chalets with all the comfort. You can serve meals in restaurants with various menus.
