Malia Bowlby as Mother in "Moral."
The 'Moral' of the story
Primetime in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre kicks off Wednesday with "Moral," written by Kisaragi Koharu, a contemporary dark comedy about Japan, consumerism and urban existence. Director and co-translator Colleen Lanki lived in Tokyo from 1995 to 2001, working as an actor, director of the bilingual theater group Kee Company, a choreographer and student of noh theater and kabuki dance. Featured for the first time outside Japan, "Moral" follows the ups and downs of a seemingly perfect family in Tokyo.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Oct. 4, and 2 p.m. Oct. 5. A discussion with the director and cast follows the Oct. 3 performance. Tickets: $10 general; $8 seniors, military, University of Hawai'i faculty and staff, and non-UH-Manoa students; $3 UH-Manoa students.
