J'Ouvert

J'ouvert Morning

J'ouvert which literally means in French, day open is the first type of masquerading that starts of the two day festival of Carnival. This type of Mas (masquerading) is known at Early Mas. It starts off at about two hours prior to sunrise and masqueraders can be seen in the streets covered in oil and mud with pitchforks and devil costumes dancing to Calypso music. The DJ playing the music, is mounted on a truck which procedes infront of the masqueraders. This procession last until the rising of the sun, when the masqueraders go home to change and come back out to celebrate Pretty Mas along with the rest of the day's events. This Early Mas, is a celebration that acknowledges the darker side of life, all that is dirty or evil that society is trying to rid itself of.
