This is absolutely the most stunning sight you'll see on a crystal clear moonless night in Maine. This is a 30 minute exposure of the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. The bright "cloud" in the center is the view as you look in toward the center of the galaxy, the galactic bulge, where the majority of the stars in our galaxy reside. Also visible in this photo are three prominent nebula, the lagoon nebula, the eagle nebula and the swan nebula. Also, off to the right, is a dark dust lane that if you really use your imagination, you can see where it gets its namesake, the dark horse nebula. In this image, although hardly apparent, are the constellations Sagitarrius and Scorpio. To see this wonderful sight, on a clear dark evening in the summer time, simply look so the south after twilight. The more dark adapted your eyes become the more details it will be able pick up.
