These photos were taken on April 28th 2003 by one of my neighbors on the cove. If you've never seen an ice out, it's a one of a kind experience. I've seen it twice, and it's amazing how quickly it all happens, literally, one minute the ice is there, then it's gone, it actually sinks. As quickly as the ice opens up, the loons will come in to make claim to their territory and will typically stay with it until it's time to fly out at the end of November or beginning of December. Ice out usually occurs in the second half of April, although based on the thickness of the ice, it can be earlier or later than that. |
