Introduction to Haiku

Haiku is a unique form of poetry which comes from Japan. It is very short and structured but, within that structure, there is considerable freedom.

A haiku consists of 3 lines; the first line contains 5 syllables, the second line, 7 syllables and the third line, 5 syllables. Because of the brevity of the poem, sentences are often not used. Most frequently, haiku poets use groupings of phrases and adjectives to describe the thought or scene they wish to convey.

As you read the haiku in the following section, let your imagination soar and think about the images each poem brings to mind.

Don't be afraid to try writing your own haiku; you'll be surprised at how easy it is.
