Youngsters at Mooseheart, the home and school for children in need that is owned and operated by Moose International, get their first taste of formal education at the early age of three years when they begin attending nursery school.
Students remain in nursery school for two years. Their training consists of singing, games, story hours, and handicrafts such as finger painting. They also engage in basic programs of letter and number recognition.
The main reason for starting the children in nursery school at such a tender age is for them to begin learning how to get along with other children of their age group, and how to act in a group while maintaining individuality. Nursery school is followed by a year of kindergarten during which the children embark on a readiness program in reading, numbers, and group sociability activities, as well as an introduction to computer skills and more basic art and music training.
Mooseheart employs a K-5-3-4 system, as students graduating from fifth grade enter a three year middle school program, then a four year high school program.
At the elementary level, students are introduced to more structured programs in mathematics, reading, spelling, writing, science, social studies, art, music and computers. A physical education program is also provided to develop the necessary skills so that a child may play and enjoy many activities.
Also included in the elementary curriculum are language arts, (which includes reading, spelling, writing and language), arithmetic, music, and general sciences.
Starting with fourth grade, pupils are placed in reading classes on the basis of their reading ability. For example, a boy may be in the fifth grade but have a reading level of only a fourth grader. He is then placed in a fourth grade reading class. The opposite is also true, a youth with exceptional reading ability is moved forward. Permitting youngsters to study reading with classmates at their own ability level has been so successful that the result has been a two year growth in reading skills.
Because Mooseheart is a private school, it is able to conduct classes in religion. Every Mooseheart youngster from nursery school age up attends Sunday school and church services each week.
Emphasis is placed on musical education and sports, and practice time for these activities is also allotted from the school day.
Mooseheart's education program is operated with the approval of the Department of Public Instruction of the State of Illinois, and Mooseheart is also a member of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. Additionally, all academic and vocational teachers are certified by the Department of Public Instruction.
