Moore/Yuille Family History

“Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which The Lord thy God giveth thee… (Exodus 20:12)

Many years ago, a man, Henry Williams, married a woman, Parthenia Moore, and in honor of her heritage agreed to take her family name in holy matrimony.  Thus, the Moore family began.

On September 21, 1896 in Aspen, Virginia, Charlotte County, Alonzo Moore Sr. was born; the second of eleven children (Robert, Henry, Leonard, Daniel, Tom, Ellen, Reva, Idell, Willard and Samuel).

As a youth, Alonzo worked on a farm owned by his father.  He then went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he was employed as a steel worker until being drafted in the United States Army to serve on the front during World War I.  Thereafter, he was employed as a chef and barber.

When God Almighty touched him to return home to Virginia, he focused his attention on his secret admirer, Sallie Ann Yuille, an intelligent Christian lady and the oldest of nine children (Molly, Elsie, Fred, David, Nowlin, Murel, Taft and Purline) born to Winston and Elvira Yuille.  On several occasions, he had noticed her traveling with her father on a wagon, drawn by a team of mules and was so smitten by her beauty that he confidently, yet secretly, boasted she would one day be his wife.

Sallie Ann Yuille was born January 22, 1902 in Charlotte County, Virginia.  She was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully.  Spring Hill was at that time pastured by Sallie Ann’s grandfather and church co-founder, Reverend George Yuille.

Alonzo and Sallie Ann dated and soon became man and wife.  The moved to Red Hill, the birth and death place of famous Virginia patriot, Patrick Henry whose best known for his impassioned speech at the House of Burgess in 1775, in which he said…”give me liberty or give me death!”  After fighting for his country in WWI, Alonzo Sr. felt highly honored to be caretaker of such a historic plantation.

After several years in this capacity, Alonzo realized that it was time to do something for himself.  It was his desire to own a farm and raise a family.  With faith and Sallie’s help, God blessed him to acquire ownership of a farm in Brookneal, Virginia (Campbell County).

Alonzo Sr. was a member of Aspen Hill Baptist Church and in later years was ordained as a deacon.  He served faithfully until his death in September of 1975, two weeks prior to his 79th birthday.  Sallie Ann was member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until she became ill and passed away on January 23, 1985.

They were the happy and proud parents of fifteen children, including two sets of twins.  Two infants, John Dillard and James Dawson, preceded them in death.  The other children were Hughes (deceased), Alonzo Jr. (deceased), Marcell (deceased), Vandelia (the twin to John Dillard), Ruth and Esther (deceased) [2nd set of twins], Lizzie Joseph, Howard, Parthenia (deceased), Elvira, Floyd and Louise.

Through Almighty God, they taught all of their children to love and respect each other.  This love was first demonstrated at home, then in the Church and finally throughout the neighborhoods and communities in which they resided.

Their God-fearing legacy lives on today through all of us and will continue to live on through all future generations that proudly carry the family bloodline.
