My side of the Moon

School is keeping us very busy!

So far, it's been fun, educational, and we haven't had to share a cafeteria with hundreds of screaming children. That's fine by all of us! I love kids. But any large group of mammals, feeding, can be a bit much.

Found out today that the ONE first-grade student actually classified as gifted at Atticus' former school, (out of 130 first-graders pulled for screening) is sitting in a portable with 44 other students for daily classes while they await construction of their new classroom.

If we needed another validation for our decision to homeschool, we'd have found one right there.

Man. I wish I could take them all home.

But my kitchen would NEVER hold that many kids...
I think our most intense experiences of the week came from our aquarium unit study. This ongoing investigation will embrace most of the Sunshine State Standards, as well as giving a good grounding in the basic concepts of the scientific method (we're doing weekly experiments). We're also learning responsibility: the boys take care of the tanks. (The youngest, age 3, is in charge of counting the fish.) And they're very serious about it. "Mom, the aMOONya's too high!" Okay, so we're working on the pronunciation. They're reading the charts right, and recording results accurately. There's also been an opportunity for deep soul growth: we've had a guppy funeral and, a couple of days later, live guppy births! Excellent timing, mama guppies! We got to see the whole life cycle in one swell foop.

Child-initiated experiment:
what's it like to roll UPhill?

(Hills are very rare here. This little hiccup in the turf caused quite a bit of excitement.)
