The Portal was the brainchild of an eccentric gnome called Jrdan and completed with help from the elves. Jrdan's idea was to find a way to connect, through magic and a space-deviation mechanism, Moonsong with endless numbers of locations throughout the universe. Jrdan created the physical structure, and a group of a dozen or so elf mages created the magic needed for it to work.
The Portal is way too complicated to explain. Like, waaaaaay too complicated. Theres lots of fancy machinery ((like the thought-reality flux capacitor, which was broken at the beginning of testing and made it impossible for the traveler to choose his/her destination and basically spat him out wherever it felt was a good place)) and lots of complicated magic ((a dozen elf mages worked for a year on the coloration of the light alone)). But basically what it does is this- if you have a destination in mind, you grab the thought-reality flux capacitor ((its just a knob with a crytal orb attached to the end- but its fancier than it looks, promise)) and tell i where you want to go. Then the Portal's light glows a little bit brighter, and you step into the Portal and out at your destination! Of course, thats how its SUPPOSED to work. There have been a few.. erm... malfunctions. But everyone has returned in one piece! Especially now that a requirement of Portal travel is a portable teleportation device. This piece of gnomish engineering is really a true breakthrough! It is the size of a copper coin, and fits right in your pocket or shoe! And when you are ready to come home, all you have to do is insert a fingernail and rotate the inner circle until it matches the markings on the outer rim- and in a flash of light you come out of the Portal! All portable teleportation devices ((or PTDs)) are currently programmed to return the user only to Moonsong, though Jrdan is currently working on another piece for off-world travelers planning on returning to their home world rather than back to Moonsong and then through the Portal again.
