A Gnomish History

They arrived in Moonsong with the rest of the clan. The gnomes were not a nomadic race, and were uninvolved in the humans' wars. They fled the underground labyrinths that had been their home for centuries because of one thing- annoying neighbors.

The ogres that lived aboveground were constantly romping and stomping about. Heavy footsteps above the caverns would cause a miniature earthquake, leading tunnels to collapse upon themselves. Everyone knows that ogres are not the most friendly of folks, and lived as they pleased. Child orgres scampered about, knocking down trees and throwing boulders at each other, until living beneath these folks became dangerous and life-threatening for the gnomes. And so, fed up with the antics of the relentless ogres above them, the gnomes migrated. And they found Moonsong- a land that was virtually ogre free.

The gnomes and humans did not interact much outside of Moonsong. When you only come up to someone's hip, and they compare you to a child, it is difficult to be taken seriously. Humans thought they were cute. The squeaky voices, the tiny stature, the huge eyes, the colorful hair. And its hard to be taken seriously by someone who says things like "oh i just want to pick you up and SQUEEZE you!" And then proceeds to try.

Yes, the gnomes in general avoided most contact from anyone other than themselves prior to arriving in Moonsong. It was better for them to just stick within themselves, developing crazy new contraptions and enriching their lives through knowledge. And practical jokes, of course.

But here in Moonsong, they felt needed. Respected even, for their engineering and mechanical genius. It was the gnomes who designed most of the buildings, the gnomes who engineered wells and watering systems for the gardens. Of course it was also the gnomes that let all the sheep out of the fence one day. And it was the gnomes who engineered a pulley system to pour buckets of water on unsuspecting victims' heads.

Dierdre and Danuel

Dierdre and Danuel were as committed to each other as a pair of gnomes could be. Sahryn gnomes don't get married, you see, but the two had been living together for years. And though they were over 40 years old, in gnomish years they were quite young. Danuel still pulled her pigtails. She still put a little too much hot sauce in his dinner. Just for kicks. Mischievous, as all gnomes are.

On this day, the two were venturing into the Forest to see the elves. They had nothing to do around their cavern, and so they wanted to go to the Portal. Gnomes preferred the darkness of the underground- their eyes were rather large and more suited for the dark. The brightness of the sun sometimes hurt their eyes. But their curiosity overruled all, and Deirdre and Danuel were as curious as anything. Word had gotten around that the elf and gnome teams had had a breakthrough- the Portal was now in working order. It could transport individuals to a multitude of different worlds, planets, possibly even dimensions. Deirdre and Danuel were looking for a day trip. Something fun and exciting to keep their attention. So off to the Portal they ran.

Arriving at the Portal, they found the elves forming a rock wall around it. "Not safe yet," they said. "Untested." Apparently the thought-reality flux capacitor unit wasn't up and running just yet, and the would-be travelers could not direct their destination. The Portal just tossed them out anywhere it felt like it. The portable returning device was in working order, however, to the guinea pigs who had ventured forth in earlier testing runs were able to return home safely.

But when has a little think like a rock wall stopped a pair of gnomes? Dierdre and Danuel, hand-in-hand, made a run for it. They snuck around the wall undetected, and were stepping through the Portal when someone finally saw- the last thing they heard from that world was an elf yelling to stop.

A New World

Dracania, huh? was the thought that ran through Dierdre's mind. A place she'd never heard of, and one glance at her partner in crime and she knew he'd never heard of it either. Perfect! An adventure. Danger could be lurking around every corner. Certain doom could be waiting to leap out of them at every turn. Their very lives could be at risk-

Or it could be a world full of dragons. So they weren't going to turn the corner and fall into a fiery pit of burning hot magma. They could even safely breathe the air. There was still hope for adventure though...

So they marched up to a large tower. Their vast intellect and incredible deduction abilities (and maybe a sign) told them that this was in fact, Cy Dragonstake. A big ol' tower filled to the brim with people who were looking to find suitable candidates to bond with dragons...

"Hold on just a second," squealed Danuel. Bonding dragons. Dragons. A hatching of dragons. A lifetime being bonded to a dragon. Flying. Imagine- a gnome. Flying. On a dragon. Their huge eyes sparkled. Adventure awaited them. They wondered if dragons have a sense of humor...

Description

Dierdre (dee-AIR-druh)
Dierdre is, like all gnomes, small in stature. At 38 years old, she is still considered very much a young-adult. She has very thick icy blue hair that she usually keeps in two huge braids. Her eyes are round and violet, and she is quite pale with a dusting of freckles across her nose. She has a slight gift of ice-magic. Slight as in she can make the bathwater of her partner cold as ice by dipping a finger in it. Much to his despair.

Danuel (dan-yule)
Danuel is in his early 40's, once again very much a young-adult. He has a huge messy mop of moss green hair and the beginnings of a mossy green soulpatch. Dierdre always tells him it looks as if he was eating seaweed and missed his mouth. He has very large and expressive green eyes, a lighter more yellowy-green than his hair. The color of an apple a bit before ripening. He is quite good at fixing mechanical objects, and shows no signs of any magical abilities.
