| Here are some of the Greek Deities and their associated myths. Apollo - Son of Zeus and Leto and brother to Artemis, he is linked to the sun and associated with music poetic inspiration archery, prophecy and medicine. He is represented as the ideal male beauty. Chaos - The first being created. Cronus - The leader of the Titans. He married his sister who gave him several sons all of which became Gods. It was said he was destined to be overthrown by one of his sons, so to prevent that he swallowed them at birth. His wife Rhea hid his son Zeus in Crete and gave him a stone to swallow instead. Zeus eventually overthrew him. Dionysus - Originally the God of fertility of nature, in later traditions he is seen as the God of wine. Loosening inhibitions, inspiring creativity in music and poetry. Helios - Said to be the sun personified he drives his chariot across the sky from East to West everyday. Hermes - The son of Zeus and Maia he was the messenger of the Gods and God of theives, merchants and public speaking. He was depicted as travelling with winged boots and a winged rod. Hypnos - God of sleep and son of Nyx (night). Pan - God of flocks and herds also the God of nature. Pluto - God of the underworld and transformation. Poseidon - God of the sea, earthquakes, water and horses. Shown with a trident in his hand. Titans - Any of the older Gods who preceded the Olympians. They were the children of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth). Uranus - The personification of Heaven the first ruler of the universe. Zeus - The supreme God protector and ruler of humankind. He was dispenser of good and evil and the God of weather. Achlys - The Greek Mother, the first being to exsist she gave birth to Chaos. Aphrodite - Goddess of love, beauty and fertility. The daughter of Zeus and Dione. Arachne - The spider Goddess. She was orginally mortal and challenged Athene to compete with her. During the contest Athene was displeased with Arachne's portrayal of Zeus (her father) and so turned her into a spider. Artemis - Huntress Goddess linked to birth fertility and abundance. Athene - Goddess of wisdom and strategy. Demeter - Goddess of the earth and mother of Persephone. Eos - Goddess of dawn. Hecate - Goddess of dark places linked to sorcery and ghosts. Hera - Queen of Heaven and Goddess of marriage. Isis - Goddess of the rainbow. Nemesis - Goddess of punsihment. Nike - Goddess of victory. Persephone - Daughter of Demeter, Hades took her and made her Queen of the underworld. Selene - Goddess of the Moon. |
