| I was brought up in a montheistic religion, believeing in "One True (MALE) God". When I first became interested in Paganism and Wicca I was amazed by the concept of the Goddess. I always felt drawn to the moon and never knew why. As I began my study of the craft I focussed on the Goddess. The Moon has inspired worship by almost all cultures since the beginning of time. It is often attributed to the feminine due to its connection with fertility, water and the tides. For Witches the three phases of the moon represent our three fold Goddess. The Waning (Maiden), Full (Mother) and Waxing (Crone) Moon. The Maiden is virginal and brave sometimes called Brigit, Diana or Artemis. The Mother is provider and nurturer sometimes called Isis, Selene or Demeter. The Crone is the keeper of life and deaths' secrets and is called Hecate, Lilith or Kali. Different rituals can be pereformed during the phases. The Full moon should be celebrated every month. Covens usually meet on the Esbats of the night of the Full Moon. Our powers are considered to be their strongest at the time of the Full Moon and it is a good time for magickal workings and rituals such as Drawing Down the Moon. Solitary Witches can also perform the Drawing Down the Moon ritual and it is best done outside under her light. There are full on rituals or more simple ones for celebrating the Full Moon. I have included two in the Book of Shadows. However you celebrate the Full Moon is personal choice and can be influenced by time, location and the weather. The imporatnt thing is to remember to celebrate. The Full Moon is a bright, beautiful celestial light we can safely gaze at unlike the sun. It reflects our sacred Circle, stimulates meditation and magickal experiences. The Dark Moon is the best time for Dark magick such as banishing, endings or clairvoyancy requiring the assistance of Hecate. |
