| One of the most endearing images of magickal lore is the Witch and her Familar. A Familar is a Witches animal magickal partner. Animals can bring something special to ritual that may have been lacking, a different perspective or a different way of using the energy of ritual. Animals have long been associated with the occult. The twelve signs of the Zodiac are represented by animals and their characteristics are attributed to the human experience. As a Leo I am likened to the Lion - a leader, passionate, loyal and protective. Animals are also closely associated with the energy of the elements - earth, air, fire, water and can intensify these in magickal workings. Animals can aslo help to link to supernatural forces. Cats are thought to be able to sense ghosts and spirits. Training a familar will require a different approach for each animal. Dogs need to be well trained as they are usually more energetic and can disrupt the ritual rather than help it! Cats, birds or snakes are generally calmer and more psychic. When training try to remain calm and patient but friendly. Be prepared for things to go wrong and keep an open mind. Our animals can teach us as much as we can teach them. My Familar is Mirage. She's a tiny grey and white kitten. I found her in the window of a pet shop and thought I just have to have her. But I needed permission to keep a cat from my landlord. I asked if the pet shop would hold her for me but was promptly told no. So I had to risk waiting for approval and hoping no one else wanted her. As it turned out I had to wait two days to hear from my landlord. I was sure the she would be gone by then so I was prepared for dissappointment when I returned to the pet shop. However, when I got there she was sitting in the basket looking up at me with her beautiful blue eyes. I took her home and now she hardly ever leaves my side. Actually she's sleeping at my feet as I type! I believe it was fate that brought her to me and we will have many happy years together. |
