"A DARK SUNRAY"
A DARK SUNRAY
(continued)
By Annie Wang
CHAPTER 2

Where is my Carry?  And what could have caused that sudden, ominous, blackness?  Then it dawned on me.  Could it be?  I questioned my hypothesis.  It has to be.  Evil had landed.  Then, remembering my long lessons of the Fields, I tried to recall the location of the Recovery Field.  The Recovery Rays would be crucial in this situation.  Yes, now I remember.  It was to my left.  This struck me with such significance that I almost lost my balance in mid-air.  To my left?  That was where the flame sprung up!  What dangers await me there?  I had no choice but to go find out.

Stumbling along in the darkness, I groped around, hoping to catch hold of a stray cloud or, I half-heartedly hoped, my Small Carry.  Alas, nothing touched my fingertips.  I drew nearer to the Recovery Field.  Finally, I was there.  Out of breath, I realized how important my Carries, big and small, were.  Without them, I arrived in more than four times the number of light-years.

To my horror, shock, and utter dismay, all the rays were gone.  Then I reprimanded my shock.  Of course all the rays were gone.  If they weren't, then they would be seen glowing in the dark.  But that would mean that every single sunray in the Land of Happiness was missing also.  In fact, the rays that I had collected no longer shone through their flasks with pure light,  I felt the flasks and they were empty.

My first guess had been that other Gatherers had taken them to calm their Carries and try to prevent this evil from spreading.  Now I knew that it was no coincidence that all the rays had disappeared at the same time.  It was the working of a powerful enemy.  Perhaps all the other Carries had, like mine, fled in fear.  Or perhaps, or a greater maliciousness?

*
I landed in what seemed, according to my touch, like a garden of some sort.  There were roots and stems of plucked flowers.  Several glowing flowers were sitting on golden stems.  Feeling sinister, I plucked the largest, most beautiful one.  Immediately, all the other flowers' golden glow winked out and a sound like sand seeping through a small opening filled the atmosphere.  The flower in my hand was the sole survivor of this mass disintegration.  Something deep inside of me told me that I had just plucked the life from gardens all around the Land of Happiness.

Holding that flower in my hand, I sniffed the atmosphere.  I never noticed the sweet dewy smell of the air.  I sniffed some more, and discovered that one could get high on it. This smell was so tangible that I could literally grasp some of it and eat it.  They floated around in the form of clouds.  I wondered if they could contain my weight and attempted to sit on one.  What happened was a bit frightening.

At first, the cloud seemed to reluctantly admit me to its prescence, and the sensation was wonderful, but gradually, the cloud started sagging and eventually I fell through its foam and landed in a heap of myself.  I think my right arm cracked.  As I fell into the bed of unconsciousness, I heard a whisper breeze flow by my body.

A few moments later, it came back and kissed my forehead, "Sleep, daughter."  I felt something carry me upon the air comfortably and serenly, even as I was drifting away.  The blackness had no depth.
