| I was recently reminded of an incident that happened several years ago that made me laugh out loud. It concerned an overnight camping trip with my friend Paul and two of my Indian friends, Avi and Abdul. I love these guys dearly and am often suprised at how almost any interaction with them turns ordinary expressions and situations into wonder and hilarious fun. During a business visit to Arlington, VA, the four of us joined up with another couple to camp in a local state park. It was an impromtu trip with borrowed equipment planned over a few drinks and inspired by the need to get some fresh air after sitting through a couple of days of lectures in a stuffy hotel conference room. I had a pretty good nights sleep until about 6 am. I awoke on my side to find Paul on his side staring at me from what seemed like inches. It was so surreal having awaken from a very relaxed sleep. He said two words --I"m cold--. I almost burst out laughing as I looked down and about a foot and a half of his legs were sticking out from under his blanket. Being the good friend that I am, I tossed the end of my blanket over his feet and laid back down. He said two more words --thank you--. I dozed off and when I awoke, Paul was awake as well but more talkative this time because he was more comfortable. Paul started telling me that he found it odd that Avi and Abdul had come into the tent with us, got into their bags, slipped them over their heads, and went to sleep. I had to tell him that I thought they had done that because of something I said. I should ask them one of these days to see if they remember. When we had arrived at the site and found out that we were sharing a tent, I mentioned to Avi and Abdul that this would be interesting since Paul slept in the raw. Avi was the first to ask --what is this raw?-- I explained that it meant that Paul slept naked. This idea was further defined by Abdul who asked if that meant that he slept without wearing clothes. I described that deer in the headlight look on their faces to Paul as an explanation. |
