Thirteen Men Twelve Angels

By Vickie Williams and Jackie Edwards

Twelve lives were lost the day thirteen men went
deep down into the earth to glean the coal called God's black gold.
Nary one refrained from doing their job, but
A rumble and a boom,
And the blink of an eye.
One more heart beat,
And time as they know it was no more.
The mining stopped and surviving began.
Blue skies twelve would never see again.
Tears of sorrow and feelings of fear sealed their bond.
Finding the safe wall is what they had to do.
Their destiny was sealed and their lives in Gods hand.
Only one would survive to tell the story for them all,
Time will heal the wounds caused by the shutter of the earth
That collapsed the shaft, but not from the loss of friends.
When the final hours are relived,
Tears will become a friend to ease the pain.
They thought they were safe when they gathered behind the wall,
But gas filled that room too.
Some wrote a note, some did not.
They closed their eyes in sleep and God took twelve men home.
