With tails that tell tales,
eyes that say aye,
and a nose that just "knows",
their puppy practical jokes
and silly mischief
make us laugh,
and are remembered forever.
We are touched....
With undivided attention,
which at times
we are certain
borders on stalking,
they follow us through life.
With loyalty beyond anything
possible for a human being,
they forgive our every misdeed,
they forget our every misjudgement,
and when misfortune comes,
they are the first one at our side.
And what, we often ask ourselves
did we ever do
to deserve a friend so loyal,
so trusting,
so forgiving,
and so faithful?
We entered into a partnership with a dog.
It is not a 50/50 partnership...far from it.
Every moment invested in this partnership
repays itself 100 times over.
We entered into a partnership with a counselor
who can not speak a word,
but listens to every one of ours.
We entered into a partnership with a companion
who is ready at a moments notice
to accompany us anywhere,
but understands when they have to stay at home.
We entered into a partnership with a friend
who will defend us from the devil himself,
but will never expect any praise for doing it.
We travel through the years with our friend,
and most times, we take for granted
all that is so special about them.
Their own personality,
their own likes and dislikes,
and their own ways of understanding us.
So much we have,
but for such a short time.....
Eyes grow clouded,
bodies grow frail,
but their spirit endures.
Their Spirit....
It is the last of their loving attributes lost,
and it is not given up
without a courageous battle.
All too soon the time comes
when we can no longer
reach down and scratch the ears
that listened to all of our problems,
no longer see the nose
that nudged us for attention,
and no longer feel the tongue
that licked our hand
with the wordless communication
of a friend.
It breaks our heart,
knowing there will never be another,
exactly like this friend
we have lost.
And once more,
bonded by love forever...
We are touched.
