Wage Peace
"War is over if you want it... war is over now....."

"Why in the world are we here?  Surely not to live in pain and fear.."
War is not waged by governments or politicians.  It is waged by people.  War couldn't happen if people didn't let it.  If soldiers refused to fight, there would be no war.  If the majority of citizens of a country refused to support a war, there would be no war.  If people hear the idea of declaring war, and call it barbaric, there would be no war.  A war needs support in order to be successful.  Here in the United States the threat of an invasion is virtually non-existent.  The wars we declare will be fought on foreign ground, out of the sight of the average citizen.  Here in this country we dont know what its like to be at war, because weve never had war brought home to us.  And we hopefully never will.  The act of terrorism of that occurred on September 11th, 2001 was the most war anybody native to this country has ever seen.  No one can deny the horror of that event.  Our governments response is to declare a war on terrorism.
Nothing can excuse or justify an act of terrorism, whether it is committed by religious fundamentalists, private militia, peoples resistance movementsor whether its dressed up as a war of retribution by a recognized government. The bombing of Afghanistan is not revenge for New York and Washington. It is yet another act of terror against the people of the world. Each innocent person that is killed must be added to, not set off against, the grisly toll of civilians who died in New York and Washington.

Its possible that someday certain unlikely circumstances may arise and a war will be necessary.  But for the most part, I do not believe in war.  This is not unpatriotic of me.  This does not mean that the death toll of September 11th does not horrify me.  I just dont believe that killing other people, destroying other countries, will bring us closer to a world of prosperity, security, freedom, and happiness.  Why would it?  A conquered country would just grow resentful, and the seeds of hate would be sown and blossom once more.  Violence begets only more violence.  Its peace we need.

As much as Id like to change the world, I know I cant.  I can only change myself.  But maybe thats enough.  Im going to wage PEACE on the world.  Im not the first to do this of course, nor hopefully will I be the last.  Now, when I say Im going to wage peace, I dont mean that Im going to get politically active and start campaigns to stop war everywhere.  Im not going to hold a protest on the lawn of the White House.  Thats all well and good for some, but it doesnt work for me.  I was thinking that Id wage peace in a more relaxed way.  Im thinking I should gradually change my lifestyle to integrate peaceful living.

By peaceful living I mean not promoting ill will, while at the same time promoting good will.  Acts as simple as driving more gently, helping someone carry their groceries, smiling at a child, and talking to your neighbors are all acts of peaceful living.  Now, Im not saying that peaceful living means giving a stranger a ride home.  This is still a world in which we cant trust each other.  Theres a fine line between kind and risky behavior these days.

As far as the war in Iraq goes, I don't support it.  I don't trust our government's motivations.  I have to question whether Bush is trying to ensure the safety of American people, or ensure the safety of the oil companies financial future.  I realize that a lot of people are still angry about September 11th.  But a war of revenge isn't just.  I realize that a lot of people are afraid of what could happen if there were more terrorist attacks.  But fear is not a good basis for decisions.  By launching a preemptive war, we're being traitors to the ideals this country was founded on.  I cannot support this war unless I get some reasons why I should.  Anyone who's interested in expressing their well thought out, well researched, expletive free opinion is encouraged to write me.

I have no idea how accurate the information provided there is, but it's certainly something to think about when considering why we're forfiting lives in a war that we have no solid reason to declare.
