I look into the eyes
Of a newborn
And see the young-old wisdom of ages, amusement at my wonderment. Who sent you, small one, to look into our very souls?
The eyes
Of a child
Hold questions for which
I have no answers.
I can not explain
that even science has no answer
for very many questions.
'Why' taken to the final degree
can not be answered.
Eyes of a lover
hold promise and need
which is ineffable
and requires no articulation.
The beating of heart to heart
the melding of body and mind
causes the earth to tremble
and the dawn to come early.
Eyes of the elders
see what was
and what might have been:
with the wisdom of the infant
and the curiousity of a child;
the fire of the lover and the serenity
of age.
Teach us of other days
and other ways
that the past will not be forgotten
in the conquest of other
newer worlds.
