The Mermaid and Siren are two seperate entities, one having the lower body of a fish, the other of a bird. As legend goes, Mermaids often would try to seduce human males, luring them with their beauty and musical talent, singing haunting tunes, often playing a musical instrument. Thus, the Mermaid / Siren symbol was used by the Medieval Church as embodying the lure of fleshly pleasures..to be shunned by the God fearing. Mermaids became prominent in church carvings, to be a reminder of the fatal temptations of the flesh. It was thought Mermaids were without souls. Sirens were thought to lure men to them, only to drown them. Mermaids are symbols of feminism, beauty, sexuality and fertility.
