| HISTORY: Jean's mutant powers were activated when she was only ten, when her best friend was struck down and killed by a car. The emotional anguish Jean felt as she held her dying friend triggered her powers, allowing her to experience her friend's emotions as she died. Jean was left traumatized and soon became withdrawn and depressed. Jean's parents took her to see Professor Charles Xavier, who realising she was a mutant, taught her how to use her telekinesis. The Professor erected psychic shields to prevent Jean from accessing her telepathy until she was more mature. It was in her teens that Jean joined the X-Men with the code name Marvel Girl. Here she met and fell in love with fellow team mate Scott Summers aka Cyclops, who was to be her future husband. Jean's telepathic abilities were released by the Professor when faced with the alien threat of the Z'nox. Shortly after the Professor assembled a new team of X-Men, Jean left the team. Soon afterwards, Jean and the X-Men were abducted and taken to an orbiting space station. To get back to Earth, the X-Men had to navigate a shuttle craft though a lethal solar radiation storm. Jean insisted on piloting the shuttle and as the radiation poisoning took her life, a cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force appeared and duplicated Jean's body, memories, personality and a portion fo her consciousness. After crash landing in Jamaica Bay, New York, Jean was cast into suspended animation at the bottom of the bay by the Phoenix Force. |
| Believing itself to be the real Jean, the Phoenix Force joined the X-Men as Phoenix. Later, Phoenix was driven mad by X-Men enemy Mastermind. After becoming the Black Queen of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, Phoenix went insane, transforming into the Dark Phoenix, casuing a threat to the entire universe. Jean's consciousness resurfaced and forced Phoenix to commit suicide. Jean's consciousness was then reabsorbed by herself and the Avengers found her at the bottom of Jamaica Bay, fully healed. Years later, Jean and Scott Summers married and during their honeymoon they were sent 2000 years into the future to raise the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Prior ( Sinister's clone of Jean Grey). After returning to her own time, Jean adopted the name of Phoenix and has remained an X-Man. |
