Academics: For 31 years
(1971-2001), I pursued my academic career at Mahidol University in
the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science. In 1983, I
was appointed a Professor of Biochemistry and, in 1988, I became
Professor C11 (the highest rank in the civil service). I taught
biochemistry molecular and cell biology to undergraduates, graduates
and medical and nursing students. My research areas included male
fertility and contraception, plant enzymes and lectins. I served as
thesis supervisors to many students at the masters
and doctoral
levels. My research received supports from both Thai and foreign granting
agencies. During my research career, I collaborated with several
foreign and Thai researchers. My research publications appeared in
many leading professional journals abroad. The success of my
research won me a Mahidol University Research Award in 1977 and a Science and
Technology Award from Thailand Toray Science Foundation in 1996.
I was given an Education and Academic Award from the Office of the
Prime Minister in 1997 for my contribution to youth development. In
1998, I was invited to be the chairman of the science and technology
management program of the College of Management of Mahidol
University. Since then, I have been teaching graduate classes and
conducted research on the technology management at the
College. |

Management: During my academic
career, I also had opportunities to serve in various administrative
and management positions within Mahidol University and outside. In
the University, I served as the Chairman of the Biochemistry
Department (1976-1980), as the Director of the Program of Applied
Academic Service for Development, dealing with commercialization of
research (1979-1981) and Vice President of the University
(1994-1995). Outside the University, because of my scientific
achievement, I was appointed a Deputy Director for research (1988-1991) of the Science and Technology Development Board (STDB),
a USAID-funded project for promoting the development of science and
technology in Thailand. When STDB was transformed into the National
Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), I became its
Deputy Director for research (1991). I was elected the Chairman of
the Biochemistry Section of the Science Society of Thailand
(1982-1983) and elected the President of the Society (1994-1998).
When the Thai Academy of Science and Technology (TAST) was
established, I became its first Secretary General (1997-1999) and
later as its Vice President (1999-present). Because of my experience
in dealing with USAID, I was invited to serve for 3 years
(2001-2004) as the President of the Kenan Institute Asia (KIAsia)
that was set up by Thai-US cooperation to promote sustainable
development in Asia in three areas: better business practices,
environmental management and human capacity development. |

Consulting: My academic,
scientific and management experience enabled me to take on
consulting assignments on education and science with several
organizations in Thailand and abroad. In Thailand, I served as a
consultant on teacher reform for the Office of National Education
Commission, Teacher Civil Service Commission and Office for National
Education Standards and Quality Assessment. I provided a consulting
service on technical career path for the Civil Service Commission. I
served as a consultant on research policy for the National Research
Council of Thailand and Ministry of Science and Technology. To the
Thai Tapioca Development Institute, I consulted on technical
research on cassava (1995-1998). My consultancy outside Thailand
included services to World Health Organization (on male fertility;
1977-1979), ASEAN (on science and technology plan; 1994), Asian
Development Bank (on agricultural research), and APEC (on technology
foresight). Later, I served as a consultant to the Nationa Innovation Agency (NIA) in 2005 and as the Director of the Agricultural Research Development Agency (ARDA) during 2005-2007. |

Service to regional scientific
bodies: I served in various capacities to regional
scientific bodies. These included Federation of Asian and Oceanian
Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB), Cassava Biotechnology
Network (CBN), APEC Center for Technology Foresight, Pacific Science
Association (PSA), and Science Council of Asia (SCA,
as its first president, 2000-2001). |
