 The Montreal Ice Boating Association

Notice: MIBA is looking for competitive individuals, age 16 to 66 with or without sailing experience to develop the Canadian team.  If you like speed, challenges and play with a team, contact us for details.  We will find the equipment you need and we will train inexperience folks.

 The Montreal Ice Boating Association (MIBA) or Club was formed on November 15, 1972 when 5 local iceboaters met at Bill Burk's home in Baie d'Urfee a suburb west of Montreal.  The Club was created to promote ice sailing in the Montreal area.

Bill held the Commodore position for a number of years until John Storr took over.  Andre Baby then followed for a dozen years or so until 2002.

Today we are approximately 30 skippers in this association and a dozen or so are active racers at the National & International levels.  The officers are:

Commodore: Claude Morin

Treasurer: Michel Baum

Regatta Manager: Bob Stone

Every week-end from December through April, we contact our network of people living near local lakes to determine the best sailing location.  Primary sites are lakes St-Louis, Memphremagog, Aylmer, Nominingue and Champlain in Vermont or New-York.  Because some lakes do not completely freeze at once,  we can move from one spot to another where there is snow free ice. Smooth snow free ice is important to get great speed.

Sailing with Club members increases safety and skills.  You should never sail alone on ice.  Prior to sailing a new patch of ice,  senior Club members walk the surface, measure ice thickness and consistency and mark hazards if any.

MIBA members sail DN Iceyachts, so named because this iceboat was the winner of a design contest sponsored by the Detroit News of Michigan. It’s the most popular iceyacht in the world as it is used in 20 countries.  It’s lightweight, can be carried on the roof top of a car, assembles in 20 minutes and it’s fast!

The Club has organized the Canadian Championship since 1992.  It's a fun regatta,  perfect for beginners and pros alike.  Here are the top 3 winners for each year the regatta was sailed;

To race at the National & International levels,  you must join the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association or IDNIYRA.  This association organizes races, maintain rules and boat specs.  It is also the organization that assigns sail numbers for a small fee.  For more information, visit the IDNIYRA web site or the New England Ice Yacht Association websites.  Their addresses are listed under Links.

How To Get Into This Sport

 You can fabricate your own DN (most Club Members have built theirs) from wood and epoxy (see Links below), buy a used one (see our Non-Classified Adds) or if you prefer, buy a brand new one from the 4 or 5 builders in the world.  You can get a starter boat for under 1,900$ or spend 10,000$ on a brand new racing machine.

You can join MIBA for as little 5$ per year.  The Club hosts an annual 'garage sale' in the fall where you can purchase a good used DN, spare parts, meet some great people that have materials, tooling and most importantly, sailing and building experience they are all willing to share.

MIBA Tune-Up Regatta, Jan 02, 2005

Ten skippers showed up at Baie Valois to race on near perfect ice, rated 9/10.  We had a NE wind at 20 km+.  We quickly put in 5 races before a snow shower reduced visibility.  Thanks to all participants,  volunteers & photograph Stephane Caron for great pictures that will be posted later.  Congratulations Stephane Arsenault for winning the regatta.  Other results are:
