Living near St. Laurent and Iberville is a common place for Romanians. In 1903, about a hundred lived there, and today you will find near 5 000 people in the community, which is organized through its parishes. The first, Saint-Trinte, was created in 1912 and soon after that, the Church of Sainte-Marie de lAnnonciation was built at the corner of Chapleau and Rachel. However, in 1972, the church was rebuilt at the corner of Christophe Colombe and Jarry. The group got divided and created another parish: St. Jean Baptiste. A church was built on the corner of Masson and Papineau.
In 1982 a $1 000000 community centre opened at 8060 Christophe-Colombe next to the Romanian Orthodox Church. In recent years over a thousand newcomers have arrived from Romania. Local events are broadcast on radio programs in Romanian on CFMB 1410. The Federation des Associations Rumaines du Canada is an organization, which aids Romanian cultural groups.
A large part of the Jewish community also has roots in Romania and for several years there was a Montreal Romanian-Jewish Organization. Until WWII, Moisches Steak House was called Moisches Romanian Paradise. |
