Jews only allowed to settle in Montreal after 1760 because before that New France was a catholic colony. By the late 1700?s a trading company was established by Jewish trappers, traders and merchants. In 1768 they established their first Canada?s first congregation, shearith Israel. Though Britain let Jews enter Judaism was not a legal religion until 1828.By the 1880?s the Jewish community in Montreal was booming due to a large wave of immigrants fleeing anti-Semitism in Europe and Russia. With the arrival of all the immigrants Yiddish was soon the third most spoken language in Montreal. This boom ended with the great depression. After WWII racism against Jews diminished and large numbers of Jewish immigrants from Morocco and Ethiopia came.
