| Gay history in general is most likely the hardest, since gay people have been around for as long as their has been men and women. Statistics say that one in ten people are homo, or bisexual, meaning that there should have been at least one gay man or woman who arrived with the first settlers of Montreal, or Ville-Marie. Through many years gays all over the world lived in fear and in hiding because they were normally not appreciated, even to this day. But Montreal first let the world know that they were not another anti-gay city in 1975, when the National Gay Rights Coalition was established. Soon after there was many community centres either dedicated in part or in full to gay people in Montreal. One of the widest known gay Montrealers known is Michel Tremblay, who wrote such inspiring tales such as The Heart Laid Bare and The Fat Lady Next Door is Pregnant. His inspiring tales, some of them Gay romance, are almost all set in Montreal. The Heart Laid Bare is one such story. It is not only a great novel, but it also lets people, gay or straight, into the world of Gay men and women. It also lets thousands of people know just how open Montreal really is. Led in part by Michel Tremblay and other great gay men and women Montreal has become one of the biggest cities in population of Gays. It is right up there with San Fransisco. |
