Former Czechoslovakia is largely made up of Czechs and Slovak people, and these ethnic groups reflect in Montreal where about half identify themselves with one group or the other. The community was much larger shortly after WWII then when it first began. This was because many Germans and Russians preferred to be identified as Czechs. Today, approximately 6 000 Czechs live in Western Montreal.
The Czech Association of Canada helped the newcomers in Canada by the end of the 20th century. Then, women found jobs as domestics while men traveled further west looking for work in the farming industry. Now, with little Czech immigration, the community�s main concern is for its elders.
