A smile is not complete without clean teeth. A lady must have a sparkling smile and sweet breath. In order to keep your teeth looking their whitest you should cleanse them often with a mixture like the following:

Take three drachms each of crystal, flint, white marble, glass and calcined rock salt, two drachms each of calcined cuttlefish bone and small sea-snail shells, half a portion each of pearls and fragments of gemstones, two drachms of the small white stones which are to be found in running water, a scruple of amber and twenty-two grains of musk. Mix them well together and grind them into the finest powder on a marble slab. Rub the teeth with it frequently and, if the gums have receded, paint a little rose honey on them. The flesh will grow back in a few days and the teeth will be perfectly white.

Another necessity for any woman is a toothpick. You should never use an iron toothpick; try to use one made from the mastic tree. The rumor is that Queen Elizabeth has several sets of toothpicks, all siver and gold, that she carries at all times in a jeweled case.

For an effective and pleasant mouthwash, try boiling rosemary flowers in white wine. Another recipe that can be made easily is made from four ounces ounces each of rose-water and plantain-water, an ounce of honey of roses, half an ounce of syrup mullberries, and one dram of alum. Mix this all together with eight ounces of white wine and boil about as long as it takes to cook an egg. This mouthwash should be used warm.
