Lord Chamberlain's Men built the Globe in 1599. They did so because they could not use the special playhouse, the Blackfriars, that James Burbage had built for them in 1596. James Burbage also built the first successful amphitheatre, the Theatre, in 1576. Burbage built the Blackfriars because his lease on the land where The Theatre was located was about to expire. However, the wealthy residents of near the theater got the government to block the Blackfriar's use for play performanances. Shakespeare and his men were left to rent playhouses. Because of this, they decided to build their own playhouse. Burbage's funds were wrapped up in the Blackfriars at the time, so Shakespeare and four of his fellow actors became co-owners of the Globe. Even after all of my research, I was never able to pinpoint the theatre where "Romeo and Juliet" was first performed. Because of the time the play was written, the play could have easily been performed in the Blackfriars or the Globe. Because of the date that I am using for this project, I ask that you once again suspend reality and assume the play is currently being performed at the Globe. If you know where "Romeo and Juliet" was first performed, please email me. I was really upset that I could not find the date and am still very curious.
