In 1934, at the height of the depression, a man called Charles B Darrow who lived in Germantown, Pennsylvania brought a game he had invented called "Monopoly" to the executives at Parker Brothers. They actually rejected the game because of "52 fundemental errors"! But this didn't stop Charles B Darrow. Like lots of other Americans, he was unemployed at that time and the game was so full of promis to him that he decided to produce it on his own.
He got some help from his friend who was a printer and with this help he sold 5000 handmade copies of the game to a store in Philidelphia. People loved it and demand grew. He couldn't keep up with the orders and went to talk to Parker Brothers again. The rest, as they say, is history! In it's first year (1935) Monopoly was the best selling game in America and over its 65 year history around 500 million people have played!
Today, it's the best selling board game in the world! It is sold in 80 countries and produced in 26 languages including Croatian! |
