GOVERNMENT

This is the same one described in Royall Tyler�s thingy at the back of The Tale of Genji with some changes by myself. More notable occupations (ones that your characters can usually have) are in white. The names for them in Japanese are listed in the [brackets] in case you want to use them. A lot of the more insignificant stuff is just for reference.

BUREAUS AND OFFICES

BUREAU OF CENTRAL AFFAIRS: Administers the palace. Senior among the eight government bureaus [Hasshou]. [Nakatsukasa Shou]

BUREAU OF CEREMONIAL: In charge of ceremonies, appointments, and awards. [Shikibu Shou]

BUREAU OF CIVIL AFFAIRS: In charge of population registers, corv�e, and taxation. [Minbu Shou]

BUREAU OF PALACE AFFAIRS: In charge of looking after the palace grounds, attending to embassies and negotiations. [Kyuujou Shou]

BUREAU OF POPULAR AFFAIRS: In charge of dealings with the provinces and uprisings. [Tamigusa Shou]

BUREAU OF PUNISHMENT: In charge of castigation for unlawful conduct or business. [Keibatsu Shou]

BUREAU OF THE TREASURY: In charge of managing tax goods collected from the provinces. [Oukura Shou]

BUREAU OF WAR: In charge of military affairs and equipment. [Hyoubu Shou<]

CHAMBERLAINS� OFFICE: Functions as an imperial secretariat, serving the Emperor and carrying messages and imperial orders. Looked after the Emperors� falcons, musical instruments, coins, books, and clothing. [Kurodoudokoro]

COUNCIL OF STATE: Stood above the eight major bureaus as the highest organ of the government. Its members were the Ministers (Left, Right, Palace), the Counselors (Grand Counselor, Counselor), and the Consultants. [Daijoukan]

TITLES AND JOBS

ADEPTS: Distinguished monks expert in the practice of healing. [Azari]

ADVISORS: Eight junior officials under the Bureau of Central Affairs; assistants to the Emperor. [Jijuu]

AIDE: An appointee in some bureaus and guard units. [Zou]

AUDIT COMMISSIONER: Provincial officer responsible for discovering and correcting irregularities. [Taifu no Gen]

CAPTAIN: Second level officer in the Palace Guards of Left or Right. [Chuujou]

CHAMBERLAIN: Responsible to the Chamberlains� Office and under supervision of two Secretaries. Admitted to the privy chamber and had direct access to the Emperor. [Kuroudo]

CHANCELLOR: Highest possible civil post. Filled by a candidate as an example of virtue. [Oukiotodo, Daijoudaijin]

CHAPLAIN: The monk who regularly performed prayer rituals for a great lord or lady. [Inori no Shi]

CHIEF CLERK: A functionary in the Bureau of Central Affairs, charged with composing imperial prescripts, maintaining court records, etc. [Dainaiki]

CHIEF EQUERRY: Senior officer in charge of the Left or Right Imperial Stables. [Kami]

COMMANDER: Commanding officer of the Left or Right Palace Guards. [Taishou]

CONSORT: Once an imperial wife whose father was at least a Minister or Prince. Now attendants to the female members of the imperial family and children. [Nyougo]

CONSTABLE: Affiliated with the Bureau of Central Affairs. Assigned to guard the highest nobles. One hundred in total. [Udoneri]

CONSULTANT: Junior post in the Council of State, below Counselor and Minister. Eight in total. [Sangi, Saishou]

COUNSELOR: Middle-level post in the Council of State. [Chuunagon]

COURT RITUALISTS: Officers of various ranks charged with conducting court ceremonies. [Gishikikan]

DAME OF STAFF: One of four women officials, under the Mistress of Staff, in the Office of Staff. [Naishi no Suke]

DIRECTOR OF RECKONING: Director of an office within the Bureau of Civil Affairs charged with calculating and allocating certain types of tax revenue. [Kazoe no Kami]

DOCTOR: A senior scholar engaged to teach in the Academy, typically history, law, literature, etc. [Hakase]

DOCTOR OF THE ALMANAC: A calendar or almanac specialist from the Yin-Yang Office. [Koyomi no Hakase]

GATE WATCH: The corps of guards who guarded the gates of the palace compounds. They are divided into the Left Gate Watch [Saemon] and the Right Gate Watch [Uemon]. The chief officer on each side is an Intendant, followed by an Aide. [Emonfu, Yugei]

GRAND COUNSELOR: The office below a Minister in the Council of State. [Dainagon]

HEIR APPARENT: The formally designated successor to the reigning Emperor. [Bou, Tougu]

INSPECTOR: Appointed to review the administration of the provinces. [Azechi]

INTENDANT: A senior officer of the Left/Right [Saemon/Uemon] Gate Watch, or of the Left/Right [Sahyoue/Uhyoue] Watch. [� no Kami]

INTIMATE: Once an imperial wife of lower standing than a Consort whose father was at most a Grand Counselor. Now attendants to the male members of the imperial family. [Koui]

LIEUTENANT: A third-level officer in the Palace Guards, below Commander and Captain. [Shoushou]

MASTER OF SPELLS: A specialist in performing healing spells, employed by the Office of Medicine. [Jugonshi]

MINISTER: The highest nonimperial office. [Otodo]

MISTRESS OF STAFF: Senior woman official in the Office of Staff. Supervised female palace staff, palace ceremonies, and the transmission of petitions and decrees. [Naishi no Kami]

MYOUBU: Palace gentlewomen.

PALACE GUARDS: The double corps - Left/Right [Sakon/Ukon] - assigned to protect the palace proper and stationed in its innermost areas. It holds precedence over the Gate Watch. Its two Commanders outrank the Intendants of the Gate Watch. A second-level officer is a Captain, third-level is a Lieutenant, and a fourth-level is an Aide. [Konoefu]

PRINCE/PRINCESS: A recognized child of an Emperor or ruling monarch. Ones are not acknowledged as Prince/Princess by the parents are usually not considered as belonging to the imperial family and often reside with commoners, away from their biological family. [Ouji (Prince), Oujou or Hime (Princess)]

SECRETARY: A senior appointee in the Chamberlains� Office. [Kuroudo no Tou]

TREASURY COMMISSIONER: The second level in the Office of Treasury. [Oukura no Taifu]

WATCH: The corps - Left/Right [Sahyouefu/Uhyouefu] - charged with maintaining general security of the palace compound and the City. The senior officer was an Intendant, followed by a Second. [Hyouefu]

YIN-YANG MASTER: An expert in yin-yang lore, connected with the Yin-Yang Office [Onmyou Ryou], an organ of the Bureau of Central Affairs charged with matters of astrology, weather, the calendar, timekeeping, and divination.
