CLUB HISTORY
The Monmouth Renegades R.F.C. was founded in October of 1978 as the Royal Renegades. At that time the Renegades were a team without a home. The early years found the team bouncing from place to place, home games were played in Princeton, Blackthorn and in Monmouth.
In the fall of 1983 they decided to stop roaming and put down roots in Monmouth County. The name was changed to the Monmouth Renegades and all home matches were played at the Dorbrook Activity Center in Colts Neck, New Jersey. When they settled in Monmouth County, the Renegades became affiliated with the Monmouth Rugby Football Club, a well established men's side from the area. With the marriage of the 2 teams, Monmouth Rugby Club became the first club in the Tri-State area to have both a women's side and a men's side.
The Renegades enjoyed regional dominance throughout the 1980's and into the late 1990's. The high calibur of play and long-standing reputation, has attracted athletes from all over New Jersey and some parts of Pennsylvania and New York. In their 22 year history, the Renegades have won the Metropolitan Rugby Union Championship thirteen times, have been ranked as high as fourth in both the former East Territory and the new North East Territory. Numerous Monmouth players have been selected for the MET Union select side and a few have gone on to play for the US National Team.
In the 1990's the Renegades have placed second several times in the Saranac Lake Tournament, and in November 1995 they won the Division II Northeast Territorial Championship.
In May 1997 the Renegades played in their first ever Sweet Sixteen National Chapionship in Minneapolis, MN. They emerged from that trip the sixteenth best women's side in the nation.
In November 2000, the Renegades won the Northeast Division II Championship. This was only the second time the Tournament was played, and the Renegades have won them both. In April 2001, they will play-off against the top three, Division I, teams from the Northeast. The team hopes to improve their standing in the Northeast and return to the National Championships in 2001. |
