| What Should the Park System Do? | ||||||||||||
| * Cease hunting in the Monmouth County Parks. * Funds that would have been spent administering the hunt should be used to install emergency sprinkler systems in park buildings, starting with the Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center. Considering the fire that destroyed the Thompson Park Visitor Center, shouldn't a sprinkler system take precedence over a recreational hunt? * Examine hunting with a critical eye. There are no studies that support hunting as a way of protecting native vegetation, reducing Lyme disease, preventing car/deer collisions, protecting landscaping or protecting crops. * To protect native vegetation, stop leasing lands to farmers, and allow the native vegetation to recover. * If the Park System continues to lease land to farmers, prohibit farmers from growing deer-preferred crops. * Urge the state to stop maximizing the deer herds on Wildlife Management Areas. The annual state Fish and Game Code is subject to a public comment period, during which the Park System can officially express its opposition to increasing the deer herds. * Urge the County to oppose further development in Monmouth County. The more habitat that is destroyed, the more concentrated the deer and other wildlife will become in our county parks. |
