Spoilers: Point of no Return, obviously
Disclaimer: I own NADA.
Searing hot pain filled his mind for but a brief second, a second that seemed an eternity to him. His mind screamed out for relief from it so loudly that he was sure that everyone heard it. But just as fast and eternally as it had come, it left. Liam looked around him; he wasnt in the chamber anymore but Resistance HQ. Howd he get here? It was empty though, usually Street was there, or someone out of the trio that he Renee and the young street kid had become after Augur had left. It was then he noticed a glowing figure, his father, on the opposite side of the room.
Father? How did you get here?
I have been here for three years my son. You are dead as I am, but your human mind must see something that is familiar to you.
This is where I was born, its always been my home. Renee, Augur, Street? What happened to them?
They live, though they grieve heavily for your loss. Hagel tried to comfort his son then, seeing the look of pure anguish on his face but was shrugged off. Liam tried to run away from him. Not his father, but his grief, of the pain that he would never see his friends again, that they mourned for him. He tried to run away but couldnt and collapsed on the floor crying heavily and hugging himself.
Why? Why did I die? Im only 3 years old! I completed my destiny so why cant I live my life?
 Live your life?
The usual, normal stuff. Not that I could ever be normal.
Love, marry, have children, grow old and die?
Yeah
You have at least completed one.
Two actually. Skipped out all the ones in the middle thanks to that damn destiny of mine. I hate it! I hate this! Liam screamed looking at his father. Oh he had loved, in many ways. Lili, Augur and once Daan as if they were family, even Street was a little sister to him. That made him laugh a brief and dry laugh. Little sister, she was at least 20 years older than him! But she was. And Renee, lovely Renee. Hed loved her, still did. Not that it meant much now. Under the face she put up for everyone was a wonderful person that he had seen. And he loved her, not that she would ever love such a person as himself.
Then I am sorry, but it is good that you have loved, better than if you had never known of it.
Better to have loved and to have lost than to never have loved at all? That it?
Yes
Well, it isnt true. Not that shed ever even feel that way for me. Good friends, yes, but never more.
How is it you know that when you have not asked her, or seen how she mourns you?
Neither could happen. Im dead remember?! I CANT DO ANYTHING! Liam was hysterical. Did I at least die for a reason? Did I succeed?
No Hagel said sadly Mael had not anticipated the eruption of the Volcano. It disintegrated everything and everyone in the room.
Great, Im dead. Not only did I die when I was three years old; have to be living in the afterlife after that knowing that I had never had a life of my own. It always being taken up by destiny or responsibility. Not only did I never have a childhood, but also I died for no reason at all!
This isnt fair! Ive never done anything wrong. I only tried to save two species, three I suppose. I tried to do what was right. What did I do to deserve this?
As humans say Life isnt fair.
Life sucks. Liam said, and added another comment But the afterlife more so.
Hagel thought for a few moments. He had been able to see Liam in his life when needed, perhaps Liam would be able to see his loved ones in the same manner. There is a way he proceeded to explain it to his son, whos face lit up at the prospect of seeing his friends again, even if they would never be aware he was watching them. He would not be truly alown, as until they passed into the afterlife themselves he would see them. What looked like a data stream appeared in front of him and in it he saw his friends. They were all sitting in the real Resistance HQ mourning, it surprised him when there was sound. But he was glad. Augur and Renee told Street of the old days before shed come along, and Augur of Liams first year of life. But beneath the laughter on Renees face at some of it was an intense and utter sadness.
Whats wrong? Augur asked the CEO concerned about her. Theyd all taken it bad, but her worst of all. Worse than even he, the man whod known Liam since birth, literally.
I just miss him so much I loved him you know. Not as a friend or as family, I was in love with him. I still am. I just I just dont know how to go on anymore. Renees voice was low but clear and Augur came up to comfort her mumbling nonsense words of comfort. For Liam it was a different matter. His heart and soul reached out to comfort her. His heart swelled at the sight of her and the sound of her voice, but he was saddened greatly by her grief. Though she would never feel it he sent all his love for her and his longing to be with her in her direction, across dimensions and life boarders. He sent out a message with his heart that clearly said I love you too, and Im watching over you. I always will. But it was of no use, she was human and there was no way she could hear such a thing. Or so he thought.
Renee suddenly stood up, a hopeful look on her face as she looked around the room. Searching she found nothing, but she could feel him. With her heart and being she could feel him.
Liam? She whispered to the surprise of the others, who promptly reminded her of his death. As if she needed reminding. Hes part Kimera, hes talked with his father who is dead, may I remind you. I can feel him
Hagel looked on through this. The grief displayed by everyone including his son was immense. Hed never seen such a thing before. Liam had mourned Beckette when she died, but it had not been as bad as this. He felt he needed to do something and so did so.
Liam cried out in shock and worry as Renee collapsed on the floor, a reaction mirrored by his friends in the living world. What surprised him even more was when he felt her presence behind him. Slowly he turned, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes and he saw the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. Renee Palmer.
The two of them clung onto each other for dear life mere seconds later. Their tears of joy and grief flowed freely down their faces now. They had each other. They cried and they cried, murmuring words of love and affection to each other. They were soon interrupted.
You must soon return to you realm, I can not hold you here much longer. Know this. I brought you here because I could not bear to see my son suffering so much, nor my sons chosen suffering. Now talk, for it could be the last time you can do so for many years With that he promptly wondered off to give them some privacy.
Liam and Renee talked for as long as they could, kissed and hugged and cried. Never would they see be able to talk until Renee died. Hagel came over to them after what seemed but a few minutes to inform them that she must go.
Remember, I shall always watch over you and the others, but especially you. I will love you for all eternity and youll never be without me. I can hear you, just call my name and I shall hear. Ill always love you, Ill watch over you. Liam ran his hand down her cheek and kissed her gently on the mouth.
Before I send you back I will tell you this. You and my son have a connection that runs beyond the boundaries of life and death. If you feel his presence or emotion, it is truly from him. Remember my son, and be loyal to him or, as the humans say, or else. Liams smile was the last thing Renee saw before she awoke in her body, back with the living.
What happened? Renee are you okay? Augur asked worriedly.
You were out for a while, Street confirmed.
I was with him Hagel brought me to him, and I talked to him. Renee looked up at the spot of which Liam looked down from and reached her hand out. She could only manage to say the name of which she longed to see again before she burst down crying, sending out her love, and feeling his. But above all she felt immense grief.
Augur picked up the devastated woman and carried her to a room so that she could sleep. He didnt know what had happened, or how Hagel had brought her to Liam. He didnt even know if it were possible. All he knew was that the woman before him was consumed with a grief that he could never imagine. He gently laid her head down and kissed her head before walking out.
He didnt see that her hand was outstretched, and in the direction to which it pointed was a very faint and ghostly image of Liam, who was also crying heavily.
Renee! A single word shouted so loudly that everyone in the afterlife heard, and many in the life of the living. It was a cry and of sadness and love, responded soon with another name.
Liam
