| This part of the lab is where I took apart the floppy disk drive for an Apple computer.
This is the list of parts that I found:
44 screws. 2 circuit boards, slider tracks, slider bars, and motors. 1 power cord, reader, reader lifter, and disk spinner. the case that holds all the peices together. | |
1. CPU-Processor-Central Processing Unit. Computers main processing chip. Does most of the thinking/work.
2. Motherboard- Socketed board that connects all of the components together.
3. Operating System-This is the software that allows the computer do do all the functions. A current operating system is Windows XP.
4. RAM- Random Access Memory. This is used for multitasking. When you have multiple programs open, your RAM gets filled up so that the computer doesn't need to access and write to the hard drive all the time. RAM is cleared when the computer is turned off.
5. Hard Drive- A disk that is in the computer that holds great amounts of info, that can be stored for a long time.
6. CD-ROM- Compact Disk-Read Only Memory. This reads off plastic disks that store memory. It is read only, so you can't write to it.
7. CD-RWCompact Disk- Read & Write. This reads and writes to a plastic disk.
8. Sound Card- A card that converts the signals from the computer to waves so that the speakers can give off sound.
9. Video Card- A card that sends signals to the moniter so that you can see what your computer is doing.
10. Speakers- A box that has a magnet and coil of wire. Electric signals make the speaker move. Electical waves make sound.
11. Printer- This unit has ink and paper so that you can print out a paper from your computer screen.
12. Moniter- This is an attachment for your computer so that you can see what you are doing. It converts the electric signals from the sound card into colors and lights that are in specific areas to create images.
13. Keyboard- This is a board that has all the letters of the alphabet and numbers. It allows you to type to the screen.
14. Mouse- This is an attachment that moves that mouse cursor around on the screen.
15. Modem- This is a card that allows you to dial-up to another computer through the telephone line, and access the internet.
16. Case- This holds all the internal parts of the computer, and supplies it with power.
17. Floppy Disk Drive- This is a storage device that puts info onto little floppy disks. Like the hard drive, but of lesser volume.
18. Software- Software allows you to do operations the you would not be able to do without the program. Software is stored on hard drives, CDs, and floppies.
19. Scanner- Can scan obects and put them into the computer.
20. Zip Drive- Much like the Floppy drive, exept bigger storage space.
21. DVD Player- Digital Video Disk Player. Special drive designed for playing DVDs on your computer.
22. Jazz Drive- Much like the zip drive. Different shape.
23. Microphone- This plugs into the sound card so that you can record sounds.
24. Digital Camera- A camera that connects to your computer so that you can capture video onto your computer.
