   INTRO AND SCORING
----------------------------------------------------

This is version 2.0 of my scenario Rise of an Empire. It runs from 1468, the capture of Timbuktu, to 1591, the end of the Songhais domination of Western Africa, a total of 123 turns. The only way to win this scenario is to capture as many objective cities as possible. The Songhai are the ones making the empire, so they are set as protagonists. Below is a complete list:

NATIONS
----------------------------------------------------

SONGHAI
The Songhai start off as the smallest empire, and with only five objectives, which means expansion into Mali is probably your best bet at winning the scenario. You have a large fleet of river boats, which allow you to attack riverside cities such as Timbuktu or Djenne, with minimum casualties. You also have a large force outside Timbuktu, and another to the east of the Mossi tribes. If you waste them, though, it will take a while to regain your units. The best strategy is to focus on the Mali to begin with, and then after conquering Lere and defending it well, concentrating of the Mossi tribes.

MALI
The Mali are the most powerful and richest nation in Africa, and among the greatest in the world, even with this decay. You start off with quite a few objectives, and you'll quickly get more if you focus on the desert cities and the abandoned Mossi cities. You'll quickly exhaust your units and wealth if you take an aggressive policy, so try and defend against early raids from the Songhai, Mossi, Tuaregs and Afrikaans. You cannot build river boats nor defend against them, so by defending Segou extensively should see the Songhai exhaust them quickly, which they historically did.

KANEM
You empire is on the eastern edge of the map board, and divided into two city groups, the larger cities around Lake Chad, and the smaller cities in the north around Seguerdine. You have a large camel army which should fend off early attacks from the Afrikaans in the south and the Hausa, and eventually conquer them if things go your way. Try and stay on good terms with the Tuaregs throughout the entire scenario and aid them, because if they get crushed, you'll be up against the Moroccans. You have to use caravans to build up your wealth considerably from the word 'Go'.

MOSSI
The Mossi are powerful tribes centred around Wagadugu, but you'll have early losses from the Mali, Songhai, Hausa, and if your not careful, the Afrikaans to the south. Reinforce your power and conquering south is best advised due to your postion and government. Try not to lose Odienne to the Mali, as the wonder (equivalent of Sun Tzu's War Academy) will weaken your power and increase theirs. Also sacrifice the east Niger River cities (except Old Oyo, a thriving town) as they are almost useless to you, and a burden to whomever conquers them.

TUAREGS
The Tuaregs were the nomads and cities which controlled all the west-Saharan caravan routes. You are extremely rich from the caravans, and you have some large cities. On the other hand, you have a large and difficult to defend empire. Any coordinated attack could defeat you. Try not to lose some of the smaller oases located around the place such as Chenachane, as they are where the attacks are concentrated. Also try to keep on good terms with the Kanem, because being surrounded by enemies is not a very good idea.

MOROCCANS
Morocco is large and powerful, and slowly reaching its true power. But civil war between the Almoradivs, Berbers and Almohads at the very beginning of the scenario will mean spending all resources against the opposition in Morocco, and coordinated Tuareg raids. But once you have defeated the Afrikaans and have made the tiny cities larger, you can turn your attention to the Tuaregs, your traditional enemy. If things go your way, you could even conquer most of the map.

KANO HAUSA
You are the weakest nation by far, but furthest from the Mali and the Songhai, which will give you time to build up an army and make yourself rich and powerful. At the beginning you are at war with both the Mossi and Kanem, which will take up most of your resources. War with the Tuaregs will almost undoubtably make you lose. Conquer the small undefended oases on your first turn, and try to conclude a peace treaty with the Kanem soon after, so you can turn your attention to the Mossi, who could have possibly taken over the Mali and Songhai. Keep the stuggles in West Africa going with your River boat, but once you lose it, you can't replace it.

AFRIKAANS
They represent the jungle tribes, the Ghana tribes, Tunisians, Europeans and the rebel Moroccans. They can not be played.

NOTES
----------------------------------------------------

- Riverboats have a strong attack, and all existing cities cannot build fortifications against them. However, they have a weak defence so try to avoid leaving them in cities. They also cannot be replaced in the existing cities. The Songhai and Kano Hausa States are the only civs which can build them.

- Every civ has its own cavalry unit, it is either a horse or a camel depending on the region. They have the same attack, defence and movemen. Also every civ has its own infantry.

- You can often make a lot of money from the events by conquering major cities such as Gao, Timbuktu, Niani, Tammenrasset and Wagadugu.

- There is no communication allowed between the Mali, Mossi tribes and Songhai. This represents the all-out fighting between them.
