Despatie collects second gold at world aquatics

MONTREAL � Alexandre Despatie of Laval, Que., collected his second gold medal of the world aquatic championships, winning the one-metre springboard event Thursday.

Despatie scored 489.69 points over six dives for the victory. The Canadian won the gold medal in the three-metre springboard on Tuesday. "I felt great," said Despatie. "After the three-metre, I thought my job was done and one-metre was going to be bonus, but I got there and everything went well again.

"I beat my personal best three times, so another great day."

Despatie's gold was Canada's fourth medal in diving at the world championships, a Canadian record. Canada won three at the 2003 world championships.

Blythe Hartley of North Vancouver took gold on the one-metre board on Monday and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal and Roseline Filion of Laval won bronze in the three-metre synchronized diving event on Sunday.

Xiang Xu of China won the silver Thursday with 445.68 points, while Feng Wang of China won the bronze with 445.56.
