BEHIND THE TEXT

1)  The minute's silence was held to show the respect that the players and spectators had for George Best.  This is a common sign of respect in English-speaking countries, especially to remember people who have recently died and after a natural disaster or other major events where people have died.

2)  Although Hornby is a big football fan and knows that Best was one of the world's greatest players, his love of his team is more important than the chance to watch a star who may cause his team to lose.

3)  It may be difficult if you don't know anything about cricket!  Cricket is a much longer game than football (international matches can take five days to complete!), so the atmosphere is generally more relaxed.  In addition, one player's contribution is generally less important in cricket than in football.  Finally, football codes tend o attract more passionate supporters than cricket; in some cases, especially in England, there can be a bit of a cultural divide.  However, this is just a generalisation; it's not always true!

4)  It means that Best never really put 100% into his times at these other clubs.  One reason for this could be that he didn't really want to play for anyone except Manchester United.  Another could be that after playimg at such a high level, he found it difficult to be playing a lower standard of football.

MULTIPLE CHOICE

The main idea of this text is that you should appreciate excellence in any field, whether it be sporting or artistic, and that this is more important than any attachment you have to your team.  One day, when the chance to see a legend has gone, you may regret it.
