Sydney FC started their campaign in style with a 2-1 away win against Shanghai Shenhua.  Their next opponents, Urawa Red Diamonds, had an easy 3-0 win against Persik Kediri and will face Sydney in Australia in Round 2.

Adelaide United didn't fare so well,  going down 1-0 at home to Chinese champions Shandong Luneng.  Michael Valkanis' own goal means that Adelaide need maximum points from their next game, away to Dong Tam Long An in Vietnam.
