About Ballroom
There are two groups of ballroom dancing as well as two styles within each group
American Style

    
Dancing that is more popular in the United States and used for more social danceing

    
Smooth-
          Consist of open and closed figures which include the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz

   
Rhythm-
          Mostly done with bent knees and include the rumba, cha cha cha, salsa, swing, samba, mambo, merengue and bolero.
International Style

    
Dancing that is done across the world and usually more technical and precise.
    
    
Standard-
          Consist of only closed (together) figures and include the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz

    
Latin-American
          Mostly done with straight legs and include cha cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive.
Another bit of information good to know is how they rank people in terms of their ability.
Bronze-- Beginner--8 to 16 figures
Silver--Intermediate--6 to 11 figures
Gold-- Advanced--5 to 7 figures
