Led by Brian Kelly's award-earning performances, Monacan finishes fourth in the Central Region Championships.
Kelly, who wins the discus with a near-record toss of 168-6 and finishes second in the shot put, is named Most Outstanding Field Events Performer. Kelly, a 6-5, 302-pound junior, came within a few feet of the discus record of 172-9 set in 1981 by Otis Smith of Armstrong-Kennedy. "Brian's a big boy, and he had a great day," Chiefs coach Dan Parsons tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch afterward. "We were worried about his ankle. He sprained it earlier this week, and his dad had to tape him up."
Other strong Monacan performances are turned in by Chris Roberson (1,600 relay team, 2nd; 300 hurdles, 3rd; high jump, 4th; long jump, 7th), Tyler Hock (400 meters, 2nd; 1,600 relay team, 2nd) and Paul Nicholas (1,600 relay team, 2nd; long jump, 3rd; 300 hurdles, 6th).
Monacan actually led the meet after the first day's events, which included Kelly's shot pun win, 18-16 over both Thomas Dale and Dinwiddie.
