The first game of the season for both teams started slowly offensively. Although the Chiefs put multiple runners on base in each of the first three innings, they were unable to score. The Generals pushed the first run of the game across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the seventh, Monacan scored its first run, to tie the game, on a single by Tori Linville, a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Redfern, and an RBI single by Brianna Bertovich. Dinwiddie was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings. Both teams plated a run in the eighth to keep the game knotted at 2 runs apiece. In the top of the ninth, the Chiefs erupted for four runs, with the big blow being a two RBI double by Lauren Gooden. Although the Generals added a run in the bottom of the inning, Megan Williams, who pitched all nine innings, shut Dinwiddie down for the win.

Megan Williams pitched a one-hit shut-out game with plenty of offensive help. Senior Jordan Beadles launched a 3-run homer in the first inning to set the tone for the game. Additional hitting highlights were Erin Walsh's 2-2 and Tori Linville's 2-3 along with a second monster hit by Beadles who hit a 2-rbi triple. No line score or highlights available at InRich.com.

W 16-0
The Lady Chief's second district game was a 16-0 romping of Manchester. Megan Williams pitched yet another outstanding game, the only hit going to Manchester's Olivia Willard. The pitching duel between Williams and Manchester's Leslie Skinner ended in the 5th inning, when the game took an unlikely turn in Monacan's favor: 16 runs scored in the fifth inning! 19 batters went to the plate and started batting practice on Skinner and later Manchester's Manuel by slugging 11 hits, including a 3-run homer by Kelly Gibson. After a sixteen run lead, Erin Walsh left first base early to create the second out, and Tori Linville batted left-handed for the third. Williams and Gooden teamed up to finish up the last three Manchester batters to end the game.

MIDLOTHIAN
L 3-0
It is often thought that closely contested games are frequently decided by which team makes the fewest errors. Having said that, that is exactly what decided this Dominion district game against rival Midlo. An infield error allows a base runner with one out, which is followed by a steal and a single which scores Midlo's first run. Next batter gets on with a fielder's choice play that fails to record an out leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. With runners in scoring position, a pick-off play to 3rd base was called. The runner was safe, however, an errant throw back to the pitcher sails over her head and 2 runs score before the ball is retrieved. Three errors, three runs scored. End of game.

Hot off the press: Monacan Chiefs are now ranked 9th in the Times-Dispatch poll with a 6-2 record. The Lady Chiefs continue to play solid softball in their game against #1 ranked and Dominion District leader Cosby. From the start, this game was a pitching duel between Megan Williams and Cosby's Whitney Haller. Monacan scattered 4 hits through 6 innings at which time Jessie Gorham reached 1st base with a 2-out walk in the top of the 7th. Following Jessie was second baseman Mandy Hopkins who smashed a double down the 1st base line scoring Jessie from 1st. The bottom of the 7th starts with Williams handling 2 weak Cosby pop-ups, and then quite appropiately, struck-out the Cosby pitcher for the final out. YEAH! Excellent defense all around with special mention going to Mandy Hopkins who not only had the winning RBI but also 4 great defensive plays.

Unlike the first meeting between these two teams, this was not a slaughter. The Lady Chiefs had a nine day layoff due to rain and their bats showed signs of rust! In the bottom of the 5th inning, Megan Williams lead off with a single, Rachel Guglielmo pinch ran for her, and Kelly Gibson bunted her over to 2nd base. Jessie Gorham grounded out but advanced Rachel to 3rd. Linville drew a walk after a discussion at the mound. Next up, Taylor Redfearn hit a hard single up the middle to score Guglielmo. Williams allowed one hit while striking out 14. Jordan Beadles had 2 hits, Bertovich had 1, and Redfearn had 1 hit and the winning RBI. A great way to celebrate Senior Night!

The Lady Chiefs have ended a long running streak of losses to rival Midlothian with an 1-0 win. Yes, April 30, 2001 was the last time Monacan won which ends a 13 game losing streak. The Lady Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and maintained their composure and intensity until the very end. That's not to say that there weren't any dicey innings. The 6th inning for Midlo started with a 4 pitch walk, followed by an error which advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. Bases were loaded up with another walk and no outs. Yikes...First out was a pop-up to second. Second out was a fielders choice play at home plate. And finally, to the relief all the parents and coaches, Megan Williams strikes out Midlo's #5 batter....Hallelujah!! Taylor Redfern and Brianna Bertovich recorded Monacan's only hits, while Megan allowed only one hit and struck-out 10.

Dinwiddie led off managing to get two runners on with walks and only one out, but stranded both. Monacan went down three straight in their first at bat. In the top of the second, Dinwiddie got the first two batters on base with a hit and a good bunt, but stranded both after pitcher Christi Caputo Kd the next three. Monacan again went down 1, 2, 3. In the third Dinwiddie led off with two walks and another good bunt to load up the bases. The Chiefs defense held up strong, and they managed to leave all 3 runners disappointed once again, while they were stranded on the bases. Monacan managed to get 2 runners aboard on a dropped third strike and a Hit-by-Pitch, but a strikeout and a popup left them there. Dinwiddie then got 2 more on base with a single and a walk, but once again left them out there at the top of the fourth inning. Katie Mavilia then got the first hit for the Chiefs, with a nice line single to left with one out. She was not able to advance though as the next 2 batters were out. Dinwiddie got 2 runners on with an error and a very strange call, which was originally a dead ball, but later changed to a fair hit which left many fans scratching their heads. They then had a good bunt to load the bases. They managed to score a run on a wild pitch, but stranded the last two. The Chiefs defense has held up real strong through the first five innings, stranding a total of 11 runners and allowing only one run. The game really turned in the sixth, when Dinwiddie got five runs on 5 hits, a walk and a couple of wild pitches. They now led 6-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Monacan got two aboard with two out on error and the second hit of the game by Kimberly Keith, a single to shallow right. They were left on, however, after a put-out. Dinwiddie then got a runner on by an error, and then scored after they stole and managed another hit. The lead was now 7-0. With Monacan down to their last at bat, they got one on base with one out, with a nice line shot by Christi Caputo to shallow right field. She managed to get to second on a wild pitch, but was left on after Monacans last two got out.
Pitching: Caputo 7 innings; 7 R; 11 H; 13 SO; 6 BB; 1 HBP.
Batting: Mavilia 1-2; Keith 1-1; Caputo 1-3.

Monacan led off with three up and three down.
Bird then got two runs off of a triple, a walk, a steal and a single.
In the second, Monacan did not get anyone aboard. Bird got the first batter on board by an error, but was left on after three straight outs. Monacan again had a tough time at the plate, going down three straight. Bird scored four more runs in the bottom of the third off of three hits up the gaps and two walks. They now led 6-0. Monacan got two on in the top of the fourth with one out, a nice shot to far right that led to a double for Kimberly Keith and Rikki Henderson reached on an error. They were both left on after a nice unassisted double play by the Bird first basewoman. Bird scored two more runs on a triple, a good bunt and a single. In the top of the fifth, Monacan went down in order. Bird got another hit, but was unable to score after the Chiefs defense held strong. Still struggling at the plate, the Chiefs could not manage to get anyone aboard. Bird then broke the game wide open after getting six more runs after a long bottom of the sixth. They scored the six with three singles, a walk, a double and a home run. In the top of the seventh, the Chiefs managed to get a runner on board with an error, and followed it up with a single by Rikki Henderson. Katie Mavilia then drove in a run with a nice double to deep center. Ashley Bookman then followed with nice hit to center which drove in the second run, but Katie was out running to home. That was the last offense the Chiefs could manage, as the next went down.
Pitching: Caputo 7 innings; 13 R; 14 H; 5 SO; 5 BB.
Batting: Keith 1-3, Henderson 1-3, Mavilia 1-3, 2B, RBI; Bookman 1-3, RBI.

Cosby led off with three runs on two hits a walk and an error. Monacan went down three straight in the bottom. In the second, Monacan had an unusual double play - Cosby had a runner on first, the next batter popped up a bunt attempt which was caught by the Chiefs catcher Scampoli. The runner on first went to second and in the confusion, no one was covering first. Scampoli ran all the way to first to double up the Cosby runner for an unassisted double play. There were no runs in the second or third, but Cosby scored one in the fourth on a single, a walk and an error to make the score 4-0. In the top of the fifth Cosby scored five more runs on three walks and four singles to bring the score to 8-0. Monacan got their first hit of the game with a single to right by Young, but she was left stranded. Cosby added two more runs in the sixth on two hits and a walk. There is not very much positive to report for this game for the Chiefs. The James River pitcher threw a no hitter with 13 strikeouts and only three walks. Monacan had only five base runners the entire game. They reached on three walks and two errors, but were unable to push any across the plate. Monacan needs to get their slumping bats going quickly. They have had only five hits total in their last 3 games.

Cherenzia hit a single to right to lead off the bottom of the first. Scampoli hit a single to left, but both were left on base. Henderson led off the bottom of the second with a single to left, but was left stranded on base. The game was scoreless in the first two innings. Bird scored four runs in the third and one in the fifth to make the score 5-0. The three hits was the only offense the Chiefs could manage, not even a single walk. They went down in order the last four innings straight. Bird blew the game out in the sixth with 13 runs with a 10 hit inning along with two walks and two hit-by-pitches. Hopefully Monacan can tighten up and put this five game losing streak to rest with their game against Clover Hill.

In the second, Scampoli got on with a single and Esposito got on when hit-by-pitch. Both were left on. Clover Hill had a big bottom of the inning. They scored six runs on three hits, four walks and an error. They scored two of their runs on a ball that was at least two feet foul down towards third, but was somehow ruled as a fair ball. Keith had a nice double to right in the top of the third and later scored after a steal and wild pitch. The Chiefs held Clover Hill; the score was 1-6.
