W 1-0 GAME 2, Sports Plus tournament at L.C. Bird. Chiefs wins a thriller against one of the state's top teams, which finished second in last year's Group 2A championship. Hopkins matches one-hitters with Northumberland's Brooke Swann (both pitchers would be named to all-tournament team). Daniels gets Chiefs' only hit. Game's only run comes in the 7th inning after Wassum walks. Fernald battles at the plate, continually fouling off tough pitches. Eventually, three balls get by the catcher, each allowing Wassum to advance a base, final one allowing her to score.

Northumberland (3-0) --- 000 000 0 - 0 1 0
27 Broad Run
(at L.C. Bird)
L 1-3 GAME 3, Sports Plus tournament at L.C. Bird, semifinal. Lackluster game by the Chiefs in their first loss of the season. Throwing error in the second inning leads to two unearned runs. Monacan spends rest of game trying unsuccessfully to dig out of the hole. Broad Run would win tournament championship in the next game, defeating L.C. Bird 5-3 in 8 innings.

Franklin County -- 000 000 0 - 0 1 2
30 L.C. BIRD L 0-3 Game of squandered opportunities for Chiefs in matchup of Dominion District contenders. Monacan outhits the Skyhawks 9-5 and puts lead runner on base in every inning but the first -- and still never scores. Meanwhile, some defensive indecision by Monacan and timely hitting by Bird gives the visitors all three runs in the 4th inning. Hopkins and McAllister, two hits each.

16 CLOVER HILL W 4-0 Chiefs return to district play with a win behind Hopkins' 10-strikeout, three-hit shutout. Offensively, Monacan threatens often but manages to score only Fernald's RBI double in the second before cinching the win with three runs in the fifth. Fernald, 2-for-3, double, RBI. Greene 2-for-3, run.
Clover Hill (0-1, 3-4) -- 000 000 0 - 0 3 2
Monacan (1-1, 7-4) ----- 010 030 0 - 4 8 0
20 at Midlothian
(No. 2 in Metro)
L 0-1 No. 9 Chiefs have their chances early against the area's No. 2 team, loading the bases with none out in the first inning and getting a total of six runners in the first three innings. But all are left on. Like many a Monacan-Midlo game, this one comes down to who makes the costly error. Monacan does, as two miscues in the sixth inning lead to the game's only run and keeps Midlothian undefeated. Hopkins throws a fine four-hitter in defeat.
Monacan (1-2, 7-5) ----- 000 000 0 - 0 6 3
Midlothian (3-0, 8-0) -- 000 001 x - 1 4 0

22 MANCHESTER W 1-0
(8 innings)
Chiefs get back on the winning track, winning extra-inning game on a Manchester error. Hopkins throws four-hit shutout in giving the Lancers their first district loss. Duncan goes 2-for 3.
Manchester (3-1, 6-6) -- 000 000 00 - 0 4 1
Monacan (2-2, 8-5) ----- 000 000 01 - 1 5 2

29 at L.C. Bird
(No. 8 in Metro)
W 9-0 No. 9 Chiefs turn a close game into a blowout with a 5-run fifth-inning highlighted by Duncan's booming triple to right-center. Monacan hits and numerous errors by the No. 8 Skyhawks fill the inning. Meanwhile, Hopkins throws a near no-hitter, giving up only a sixth-inning infield single. Daniels, 3-for-5, 3 runs. Duncan 2-4, triple, RBI. Loftis 2-5, run. Eleven Monacan batters strike out.
Monacan (3-2, 9-5) ---- 100 053 0 - 9 8 0
L.C. Bird (2-4, 7-7) --- 000 000 0 - 0 1 5

38 at James River W 4-1 Another good outing by Hopkins, who throws a four-hitter, although her shutout is lost to what could have been ruled an unearned run in the final inning. Wassum gets two hits for the Chiefs, who pull into a second-place tie with Manchester in the Dominion District.
Monacan (4-2, 10-5) ------ 000 301 0 - 4 6 0
James River (1-5, 6-5) --- 000 000 1 - 1 1 5

May
4 JAMES RIVER L 1-6 Four days after Monacan easily beats James River, tables are turned. Rapids piece together several hits and an error for four runs in third inning to take control. Loss dims Monacan's chance at regular-season championship. Chiefs could have moved within one game of district-leading Midlothian (upset by Clover Hill) but instead slip into third place.
James River (1-5, 6-5) --- 004 002 0 - 6 8 0
Monacan (4-3, 10-6) ------ 010 000 0 - 1 5 2

6 at Clover Hill W 6-1 Chiefs rebound with easy win. Hopkins throws 5-hitter for the win, losing shutout in final inning. Wassum 2-for-3, 2 runs.
Monacan (5-3, 11-6) ------ 121 020 0 - 6 8 0
Clover Hill (2-4, 7-8) ----- 000 000 1 - 1 5 2

13 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 6 in Metro)
L 0-1 No. 9 Chiefs again lose 1-0 to Midlothian, again on an unearned run. This time the run comes in the first inning. Chiefs get runners as far as third base a couple of times despite getting only four hits, two in the final inning, but can never score. Monacan runner is tagged out in a rundown between third and home to end the game.
Midlothian (5-3, 11-6) -- 100 000 0 - 1 4 1
Monacan (5-4, 11-7) ----- 000 000 0 - 0 4 3

18 at Manchester W 2-1
(8 innings)
Chiefs move into a virtual tie for second place in their Dominion District regular-season finale, meaning the two most likely will face each other in the district's first-round playoff game. Monacan scores in the seventh to tie and then adds the game-winner in the eighth to back up Hopkins' three-hitter. Wassum raps out two hits.
Monacan (6-4, 12-7) ----- 000 000 11 - 2 5 5
Manchester (5-4, 8-10) -- 000 100 00 - 1 3 1
19 VARINA
(No. 8 in Metro)
W 2-1 Each team can manage only two hits. But 10th-ranked Monacan manages to score two runs in the fourth inning to knock off the 8th-ranked Blue Devils. Loftis triples and later scores. Staton gets game-winning RBI. Hopkins strikes out eight in winning the regular-season finale.
Varina (11-7) ---- 001 000 0 - 1 2 1
Monacan (13-7) --- 000 200 x - 2 2 1
25 Manchester
at L.C. Bird
L 1-9 Dominion District tournament at Midlothian. No. 2 seed Chiefs give up two first-inning runs with sloppy defense, then try to play catch-up the rest of the way against the No. 3 Lancers.
Monacan moves within one run on McMurray's RBI double in the third and remains close despite giving up an over-the-fence home run to Manchester's Lauren Johnson. But more sloppy defense and hot Manchester bats sew up the game with a six-run final inning, ending Monacan's season. Win was Manchester's first over the Chiefs in four years.
Game ends the 20-year coaching career of Keith Daniels, who retires with more than 300 wins, 12 district regular-season titles, seven district tournament crowns, two Central Region championships, and five state Group AAA tournament appearances.

Manchester (9-11) -- 200 010 6 - 9 14 0
Monacan (13-8) ----- 001 000 0 - 1   3 5
(NOTE: Hits and errors as reported by Monacan. Manchester reported 16 hits and 4 errors for Manchester, and 2 hits and 1 error for Monacan.)

Preview
from the Richmond Times-Dispatch
March 19, 2004
Pre-Season Metro Rank: No. 10

Monacan (8-2, 15-6) always is in the district title mix, but the Chiefs may have to do it this year by getting better as the season progresses. All-Metro outfielder Brittany Daniels (.391) and Jamie McAllister (Jr., OF, .351) were the only players to hit better than .300 a year ago. Dana Wassum (Sr., 2B) is sound in the field. Tracey Hopkins (5-2, 0.80 ERA) will do the pitching. Coach Keith Daniels likely will call it quits at season's end after 20 years.
