Dominion District tournament: 0-1
Final Metro rank: No. 2
March
18 at Dinwiddie W 6-0 Easy season-opening win for the Chiefs.
21 at Thomas Dale PPD .
24 at Thomas Dale W 10-2 Chiefs collect 9 hits in easy win. Reitz pitches 3-hitter. Swaney inside-the-park HR. Wassum triple, single (and error that allows her to go all the way around to score).
25 at Clover Hill W 4-2 Monacan scores three in first inning on one hit, then holds on. Chiefs do rap out 11 hits, led by Coullier's 2-for-4, 2 RBIs. Reitz throws 1-hitter with 6 strikeouts.
27 at Midlothian
(No. 9 in Metro)
L 0-1
(10 innings)
Chiefs come out on the short end of a pitcher's duel between Monacan's Kate Reitz (5 hits allowed) and Midlo's Erica Cifarelli (4 hits). No. 2-ranked Monacan squanders a couple opportunities, especially in the 8th inning when Brittany Daniels bunts her way on, is sacrified to second and moves to third on a wild pitch with only out. She is stranded there. Then in the 10th, Midlothian leads off with a triple. Two intentional walks load the bases and Monacan gets a force out at home. But a hit to short left field brings home the game-winner. Haley Swaney has two of Monacan's four hits.
31 at Varina PPD rescheduled for April 2.
April
  1 at Atlee
(No. 4 in Metro)
L 0-1
(10 innings)
No. 2 Chiefs lose second straight 1-0, 10-inning game, this time to the defending state champions. Raiders are dominated by Monacan pitcher Kate Reitz, who throws a one-hitter, but score the game-winner in the 10th on a walk, sacrifice, passed ball and infield error.
The loss was the "agony" part of an agony-ecstasy moment for Monacan. Just 20 seconds later, on the adjacent field, Monacan's baseball team gets a game-winning three-run homer in the top of the final inning.
Softball Chiefs, who beat Atlee 7-0 in a pre-season scrimmage, struggled offensively, getting only three hits against Kristen Bruce. Chiefs had scoring opportunities, once loading the bases and another time putting runners on first and second with one out, but couldn't cash in. Eleven Chiefs struck out. Several were nipped at first base on ground balls.
Meanwhile, Atlee struck out 13 times against Reitz and did not get its only hit until the ninth inning. The Raiders had no serious scoring threat until the game-winner.
2 at Varina L 1-2 Offensive woes continue for Chiefs (now ranked No. 4), who beat Varina 10-0 in scrimmage but can muster only one hit this time. Hopkins' five-hitter goes for naught as Varina scores twice in the fourth inning. Loss was Monacan's third straight, its longest losing streak in 19 years.
3 at L.C. Bird W 5-1 Chiefs end three-game losing streak, scoring twice in the first inning and three times in the fifth.
Reitz throws 5-hitter with 8 strikeouts, allowing only a run in the sixth. At the plate, Reitz goes 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Grantham 3-for-3 with a home run that rolls to the 300-foot (men's) fence at Ironbridge Park. Daniels 2-for-4. Chiefs rap out 10 hits.
After playing its first seven games on the road, Monacan will be at home for 11 of the remaining 13 regular-season games.
9 DINWIDDIE PPD Rain. Rescheduled for April 18.
10 JAMES RIVER PPD Rain.
18 PRINCE GEORGE
(No. 8 in Metro)
W 2-1 No. 10 Chiefs score in the 2nd and 5th innings to top the No. 8 Royals over spring break. Reitz fires three-hitter, not allowing a run until the final inning; she also has one of Monacan's four hits, a double to drive in a run. Wassum goes 2-for-2 and drives in the other.
Because of rainouts and spring break, game was the Monacan's first in more than two weeks. Make-up game with Dinwiddie followed.
18 DINWIDDIE W 7-1 Monacan sweeps a double-header (against different opponents), scoring six runs in the first three innings.
Hopkins and Reitz (who relieves in the fourth, after Dinwiddie's only run scored) combine on a three-hitter. Reitz is 2-for-4 at the plate, with 4 RBIs. Wassum is 2-for-2, with 2 RBIs, and scores twice herself.
Game was rescheduled from April 9.
22 at Manchester
(No. 6)
W 4-2 Dramatic come-from-behind win for No. 10-ranked Chiefs, who score all four runs in the final inning. Win lifts Monacan into a multi-team tie for the Dominion District lead.
Chiefs, who have struggled offensively, get 10 hits against the No. 6 Lancers. Still, Manchester scores twice in the four inning and leads 2-0 going into the seventh.
Monacan hits by Wassum, Daniels and Reitz load the bases with none out. A Manchester error at the plate allows Wassum to score. Coulier's single then drives in Daniels to tie the game. After a fly out, Nunnally delivers the game-winning single, scoring both Reitz and pinch-runner McMurray. Chiefs shut out Monacan in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Dominion's top four teams all have a loss: Monacan lost to Midlothian, which lost to James River, which lost to Manchester, which lost to Monacan.
23 TIMBER CREEK, N.J. W 7-0 Chiefs rely on late-inning lightning again, scoring six times in the sixth inning to break open a close game for their fifth straight win.
No. 10-ranked Monacan pounds out 10 hits: McAllister 3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI. Daniels 2-for-4, 2 RBIs. Coulier 2-for-4. Reitz, who injured a knee running the bases in the sixth inning, combines with Hopkins on the three-hit shutout.
Visiting Timber Creek (5-4) was on a spring-break tour, playing Richmond area teams.
24 CLOVER HILL W 11-2 No. 10-ranked Chiefs (now 9-3, 4-1) win sixth straight despite slow start against the Cavaliers, winless in the Dominion District.
Clover Hill goes up 2-0 in the first, thanks to Monacan errors. Monacan is kept off the scoreboard until combing hits with walks in the fourth (1 run), fifth (4 runs) and sixth (7) innings. Offensive highlights: Daniels 2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 runs. Coullier 2-for-4. McAllister 2 RBI. Swaney triple, 2 RBIs. Nunnally double, 2 RBIs.
Hopkins, filling in for the injured Reitz, limits Clover Hill to one hit. Anne West, called up from JV with the injury, works a scoreless seventh.

28 THOMAS DALE CANC .
29 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 10 in Metro)
L 0-1 Tough loss for the No. 3-ranked Chiefs, ending their six-game win streak and dropping them into a tie for second (with Midlothian) in the Dominion District.
In their first game without star pitcher-hitter Reitz (out indefinitely with a torn ACL), Chiefs get a one-hitter from from Hopkins. But Midlo's one hit, an error by Hopkins and a wild pitch score an unearned run in the visitors' half of the second.
Monacan gets only three hits but they result in two scoring opportunities. In the fourth, Daniels and McAllister single. A wild pitch moves them to third and second bases but Chiefs can't get them home. In the sixth, Daniels singles, moves to second on a bad throw and is sacrificed to third by McAllister. But she is narrowly thrown out at the plate on a ground ball to second.
May
1 VARINA W 1-0 Chiefs win late on Swaney's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to back up Hopkins' four-hit shutout.
Coullier leads off the seventh with a double that one-hops the left-field fence a few feet from the 205-foot sign. McMurray bunts her to third and Hopkins singles to center to bring her home.
6 L.C. BIRD W 6-5 Chiefs win another one late, scoring in the bottom of the sixth to break a 5-5 tie and remain in contention for the Dominion District title.
Swaney's bases-loaded triple to deep left helps get the Chiefs off to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Chiefs add another in the second but that only equals the three scored by the Skyhawks in the second and two in the third. West relieves in the third for Monacan and pitches shutout ball the rest of the way as the game settles into a pitcher's duel.
Monacan's final run was set up by a walk, two singles and a Bird error. Chiefs (5-2 in district) remain one loss behind James River and tied with Midlothian. Monacan and James River play twice in the season's closing days.
  8 DOUGLAS FREEMAN
(No. 9 in Metro)
W 1-0 Chiefs win another one late, this time on Reitz's sixth-inning single, driving in Daniels, who had singled and been bunted to second. (Reitz was given medical clearance to play with a torn ACL suffered two weeks earlier.)
Hopkins pitches one-hit, complete-game shutout.
13 at James River
(No. 4 in Metro)
W 1-0 No. 6 Chiefs top No. 4 Rapids behind Hopkins 7-hit, 6-strikeout shutout. Late-game win leaves Monacan in virtual first-place tie with Midlothian, dropping James River out of the tie.
Both team put runners on base but neither can score until Reitz comes home in the 6th. Swaney's hard grounder to second brings a play at the plate but James River catcher drops the throw.
Four teams qualify for next week's district tournament. Standings: Midlothian 7-2, Monacan 6-2, James River 6-3, Manchester 4-5, Bird 3-6, Clover Hill 0-8.
15 MANCHESTER W 3-2 Coach Daniels' 300th career win comes in the final inning and keeps the 7-2 Chiefs in contention for at least a share of the district title with Midlothian, which also has 2 losses. Monacan will close out regular season against James River, which has 3.
Chiefs' win marks the sixth time this season that they scored the winning run in the 6th or 7th inning.
Monacan had taken 2-0 first-inning lead, highlighted by Coullier's RBI single, and held it through most of the game. But Manchester tied the game with 2 runs in the top of the sixth. Chiefs then come back to win on Brittany Daniels' RBI in the bottom of the seventh. Daniels goes 2-for-4. Hopkins pitches until Reitz comes in in the 6th inning.
16 JAMES RIVER W 3-2
(8 innings)
Chiefs win in the 8th on Coulier's double and Swaney's RBI single, clinching tie for Dominion District title.
Win was their sixth straight and marked the eighth time Monacan has scored the winning run in the sixth inning or later. Grantham had two doubles to lead Monacan's six-hit attack.
Left fielder and lead-off hitter Daniels sprains an ankle backing up a play at third base and is removed from the game.
Chiefs and Midlothian each finished 8-2 in the district. Teams will play off Monday to decide the regular-season championship and the automatic spot in the regional playoffs the following week. Both teams will play the district tournament; the loser of the playoff game can still advance to the regionals by claiming the district's other spot through the district tournament.
20 Midlothian
(No. 1 in Metro)
L 0-7 Playoff for Dominion District regular-season championship, at James River. Much-anticipated matchup between metro area's two top-ranked teams is a dud, thanks to Trojans' hitting and Chiefs' miscues.
Midlothian scores in the second on a two-run double, then adds another run in the third. Game is broken open in the fourth inning when Midlo gets four runs, all coming after Chiefs should have gotten three outs.
Midlothian is credited with a dozen hits for the game. No. 2-ranked Chiefs get only two singles (Wassum, McMurray). Monacan has only one scoring threat, putting runners on second and third with two out. Chiefs were without lead-off hitter Daniels, on crutches following bad ankle sprain from previous game.
Midlo thus gets district's automatic spot in Central Region tournament next week. Both teams now advance to district tournament semifinals. Monacan will get district's second spot in regionals if it beats James River and if Midlo beats Manchester. If Manchester beats Midlo, Chiefs will need to win two games to claim spot.
27 vs James River
(No. 8 in Metro)
L 0-3
(5 innings)
Dominion District tournament semifinals at L.C. Bird. Postponed one full week by rain, game finally gets played but is ended one batter into the sixth inning by still more storms.
James River scores once in the first and twice in the third inning in ending the Chiefs' season. Monacan never seriously threatens. Playing without injured leadoff hitter Daniels, Chiefs manage only one hit, Grantham's single in the fifth inning.
James River thus advances to regional tournament, along with Midlothian, which had defeated Monacan in a playoff for regular-season championship. Monacan, ranked No. 2 in the metro area, finishes with a record of 15-6.

Chiefs add another unearned run in the fourth on a walk and three stolen bases by Jamie Loftis, who had six steals for the game. Meanwhile, Monacan's Ashley Duncan, who went two batters deep into the seventh, keeps Varina off balance with good ball movement and a wicked change-up. Anne West comes on in the seventh with two runners on base and strikes out three of the five batters she faces.

Chiefs have an opportunity to blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth but can only plate two runs on three singles and three walks; one runner thrown out at home by the centerfielder and three base runners are stranded. Lancers score two more in the fifth but Chiefs unable to answer. Anne West pitches 4-2/3 innings, giving up 7 hits and all 7 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 4.
