March
 9 VARINA -- scrimmage
15 at Atlee -- scrimmage
21 MEADOWBROOK PPD wet field
25 THOMAS DALE W 2-0 No. 3 Chiefs open with win, scoring 2 in the bottom of the fifth. Reitz 1-hitter, 7 Ks, 2 for 4. Coullier 2 for 2. Jul. Dewalt 1 for 3, RBI.
26 at Clover Hill W 10-0 No. 3 Chiefs opened up district season and tuned up for Thursday's Midlo game with easy win, highlighted by a seven-run fourth. Reitz and Hopkins combined for 4-hitter. Chiefs had 12 hits. Wassum 2 for 3, double. Duncan 2 for 3, double.
28 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 9 in Metro)
L 0-1
(9 innings)
Two of Dominion District's top teams battled throughout the afternoon, each failing to score despite numerous baserunners. Midlo took the lead in the top of the 9th (the second extra inning), with a single, two bunts and a single. No. 3-ranked Monacan put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth but could not get one home. Reitz pitched a complete-game 7-hitter. Chiefs had 6 hits, led by Coon's 2-for-4 performance.
April
 5 at Prince George
(No. 8 in Metro/Region)
W 2-1
14 innings
Grantham drove in both runs as No. 3 Monacan edged No. 8 Royals in the equivalent of a doubleheader on a sunny, breezy day. Chiefs scored in the top of the first, Grantham knocking in Swaney. They continued putting numerous runners on base (12 hits plus 5 Prince George errors) but couldn't capitalize. Prince George struggled against Reitz but scored in the bottom of the 6th. Royals then had several scoring opportunities in the extra innings but good defensive plays kept Monacan alive. Chiefs finally got the go-ahead run when Grantham knocked in Reitz. Reitz gave up 7 hits and struck out 13 in getting the win. Swaney had 3 hits. Next up: Atlee, currently ranked No. 2.
10 ATLEE
(No. 2 in Metro)
W 1-0 A stellar pitching performance by Reitz and timely hitting by Duncan and Coullier led Monacan to big win. Chiefs, who fell to No. 6 in Metro area rankings released this morning, responded against No. 2 Atlee. Strong pitching by Reitz kept Atlee at bay. But Monacan could not score either, despite Reitz's third-inning double. Chiefs finally broke through in the bottom of the 6th. With two out, Duncan doubled hard down the left field line. Pinch runner McAllister moved to third on a passed ball, then came home on Coullier's single to center.
Richmond Times-Dispatch, April 11: 'Chiefs' Duncan, Coullier on time'
12 at L.C. Bird W 5-0 Chiefs come out swinging and score twice in the first inning, more than enough to back up Reitz's pitching. Chiefs get 11 hits. Reitz, 4-hit shutout, 5 K's; 3 for 5. Duncan, 3 for 5, RBI.
15 at Thomas Dale W 2-0 Reitz's 2-hitter, with 7 Ks, stops Dale. Monacan scores two in the sixth for win. Duncan has two of Chiefs five hits.
19 at James River
(No. 8 in Metro area)
W 1-0 Reitz's two-hit pitching performance and fifth-inning RBI single left the No. 2 Chiefs over the No. 8 Rapids. Two teams had begun the day in a four-way district tie for first (with Midlothian and Manchester) at 2-1. James River threatened early but then was held at bay. Chiefs finally broke through on Jessica DeWalt's single, a forceout, Dana Wassum's steal of second base and Reitz' single.
24 at Manchester
(No. 9 in Metro area)
W 1-0 Swaney's third-inning RBI single was enough to beat the No. 9-ranked Lancers. Reitz one-hit shutout, 7 strikeouts. Win knocked Manchester out of a three-way tied for Dominion District lead. No. 2 Monacan and (No. 5) Midlothian now co-leaders with one loss apiece.
26 CLOVER HILL W 6-0 Reitz (5 innings) and Hopkins (2) combined for no-hitter against winless Cavalies. Chiefs scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fourth innings in what amounted to a tuneup for big doubleheader in Chesapeake against perennial power Great Bridge and Hickory. Swaney 2-for4, tiple, run. Duncan 2 for 3, 2 runs, SB. Je. DeWalt 2-for-3, 2 RBIs.
27 at Great Bridge L 0-10 Rough outing against one of Virginia's perennial powers, who were state champions in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Last year, Chiefs beat Great Bridge 1-0 at Monacan but this time fell to a no-hitter by Calli Jo Varner (with 10 strikeouts) on the Great Bridge field in Chesapeake. Chiefs (9-2) committed six errors, many in the first inning, leading to five first-inning runs by the home team and wholesale substitutions by the visitors. Great Bridge (13-1) got 13 hits against Reitz and Hopkins, played errorless defense and never allowed Monacan into the game. Game against Hickory followed on the Great Bridge field. (greatbridgesoftball.com article)
27 Hickory W 6-0 Second game of doubleheader against Chesapeake teams, played at Great Bridge. Chiefs rebounded after first-game loss behind Reitz's one-hit, 9-strikeout performance. Monacan dominated, scoring three runs in the first and taking this game as convincingly as they had lost the first. Grantham 2-for-3, double, RBI. Swaney, double, 2 RBIs.
May
 1 at Midlothian
(No. 5 in Metro area)
L 0-3 Chiefs entered game now ranked No. 4, following loss to Great Bridge. Monacan falls to a perfect game -- no hits, no base runners -- from Midlothian pitcher Erica Cifarelli, who struck out 9. Loss knocks Monacan out of a first-place Dominion District tie with Midlo. Game seemed headed toward a replay of teams' first matchup, which went eight scoreless innings (Midlo winning 1-0 in the 9th). Neither team threatened in early innings. But a few timely Trojan hits and sloppy Chiefs defense led to three runs in the fourth. Midlothian cruised from there.
8 L.C. BIRD W 4-2 Chiefs improve to 6-2, at the same time district leader Midlothian (losing 1-0 to Manchester) was falling to 6-2. Monacan scores all four runs in the first three innings, then hangs on behind Reitz's 8-hit, 9-strikeout effort. Duncan 2-for-3, double, RBI. Grantham 2-for-2, 2 doubles, RBI.
13 at Varina PPD
15 JAMES RIVER
(No. 9 in Metro area)
W 2-1 Jul.DeWalt (fourth-inning double) and Coullier (fifth-inning single) drove in the runs to back up Reitz's three-hit, eight-strikeout pitching. Chiefs committed four errors officially. But they also had seven hits, led by Reitz's 2-for-3 performance. Win keeps Monacan (7-2) alive in the Dominion District race. (Midlothian finished 8-2.)
17 MANCHESTER W 3-0 Chiefs' win earns tie for the Dominion District championship with Midlothian. Two teams, each with 8-2 district records, will have one-game playoff Monday at Monacan. Winner will be regular-season champion, gaining No. 1 seed for the district tournament and one of the Dominion's two spots in the following week's regional tournament. Chiefs beat Manchester behind Reitz's 1-hitter. Monacan's six-hit attack was led by Reitz, 2-for-2, double, RBI; Jess Dewalt, 1-for-3, run; and Swaney, 1-for-3, run.
20 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 4 in Metro area)
W 1-0
(Regular-season playoff)
Monacan slips by Midlothian 1-0 in a one-game playoff, breaking a regular-season tie and winning the Dominion District championship, behind Kate Reitz's no-hitter. Win automatically qualifies Monacan for a Central Region tournament home game next week. But first, Monacan -- ranked No. 5 in Metro area -- will play as the No. 1 seed in the district tournament, against either Manchester or Bird; teams tied for fourth and were involved in another playoff late Monday to see which made the tournament. Monacan's win over Midlothian, in a quick 1 hour and 4 minutes, was highlighted by Reitz's no-hit, four-strikeout performance. Reitz, who reached on an error, scored the game's only run in the first inning. Leslie Duncan had the Chiefs' only hit.
21 L.C. BIRD L 2-3
(10 innings)
Semifinals, Dominion District tournament at Monacan. First game: No. 4 Bird 3, No. 1 Monacan 2. Second game: No. 3 James River 2, No. 2 Midlothian 0. (Monacan still will represent the Dominion District as its No. 1 seed in next week's Central Region tournament with a home game. District's other representative will be the tournament winner.)
A day after winning the biggest game of its season so far, Monacan looked sluggish offensively and defensively and fell behind 2-0 after three innings. Chiefs began hitting but could not score until rallying for single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, sending the game to extra innings. Bird scored the game-winner in the 10th inning of this two-hour-40-minute marathon, putting together a passed-ball strikeout and two singles. Chiefs actually outhit the Skyhawks, 11-9, led by Reitz's 4-5 and Grantham's 3-for-5 performances.
(Note: In Metro area rankings released today, but not including yesterday's playoff games, Midlothian was ranked No. 3, Monacan No. 4 and James River No. 9.)
(Note: James River defeated Bird on May 24 to win tournament and district's second spot in the regionals.)
28 DINWIDDIE W 11-0 1st round, Central Region tournament. Easy win for the Chiefs, who scored three runs in the first inning, then broke the game open with seven in the fourth. Monacan had only six hits but benefitted from numerous walks and hit batters. Reitz and Hopkins combined on two-hit shutout. Reitz/pinch runner scored three runs. Jul. Dewalt had two hits and three RBIs. Coon, double and two RBIs. Chiefs advance to play Atlee, 7-1 winner over Douglas Freeman.
Times-Dispatch region preview
30 Atlee L 0-4 Monacan falls in semifinals of Central Region tournament (held at Prince George H.S.), one game short of qualifying for states. Rematch of last year's regional championship game, won by Monacan. But this time, Atlee used a pair of triples to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning, then added runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the win. Chiefs had beaten Atlee 1-0 during the regular season. But they never could get going offensively in this one, managing only two hits (by Duncan and Swaney) and striking out seven times. Times-Dispatch article.
(NOTE: Atlee went on to defeat Mills Godwin for the regional championship, then won three straight 1-0 games in the state tournament to become state champions.)
