Prince George Invitational Tournament
W 1-0
1st Round vs. Maggie Walker. Chiefs open the 2008 campaign with a victory over a young but sound Governor's school team to advance to the final of the Prince George Tournament. The first half sees even play with few scoring chances for either side as both teams defend well. The Chief's liberal substitutions begin to pay dividends 20 minutes into the second half as they suddenly appear the fresher team and begin to threaten the goal regularly. Zack Jones and Jeremey Goff come close before Ramon Gomez pounces on a rebound from a deflected Jordan Clark shot to finish from close range in the 69th minute. Chiefs create several more chances before the final whistle. Defensive play of Goff, Logan Stykemain, Taylor Rash, Justin Pugh and Collins Youngblood is excellent for the match.

Prince George Invitational Tournament
W 3-0
Finals vs J.R. Tucker. Monacan brings home the trophy from the Prince George Tournament with a solid 3-0 victory over J.R. Tucker. Chiefs settle 5 minutes in and look a threat to score the remainder of the first half. Finally just before the half, Okelana hits a 35 yard wonder strike that rockets in just under the bar. Chiefs carry the momentum after the break. The second goal comes in the 59th minute when Cheatham plays a ball across the area from the right flank that Byrd leaves for Farnsworth to slot home from 8 yards. The scoring is complete three minutes later as the Tucker keeper stops Clark and Glynn in quick succession, but is helpless as Jone knocks in the second rebound into an open net. Burnett makes a couple of good saves in the last 10 minutes to preserve the clean sheet.

W 5-1
Chiefs dominate this match from start to finish and cruise to their third straight victory. T.J Byrd opens the scoring in the 9th minute after a long individual dribbling run into the area. In the 24th minute, Ramon Gomez pounces on a short L.C. Bird goal kick and manuevers in close for the second goal. Hunter Cheatham closes out the first half scoring in the 36th minute, nodding in a well struck Kyle Butta direct kick. After the break, Zach Jones picks up a loose ball in the area to finish strong from 8 yards. L.C. Bird converts their first good scoring opportunity in the 73 minute. Hunter Cheatham closes the scoring just before full time, heading in a nice service from Steven Golob.

Chiefs head into the break undefeated after an impressive victory over the Lancers. Chiefs control possession in the first half and create several excellent chances. Finally in the 34th minute, Jones plays a ball forward to Cheatham who finishes from 10 yards. After the break, Cheatham strokes in his second after long service into the box is contested by several defenders but falls to his feet. Farnsworth adds the third in the 61st minute on a direct free kick from 35 yards that is mishandled by the Lancers keeper. Then Clark scores from the right side of the area as Glynn lays the ball off. In the 73rd minute, Cheatham assists a nice goal by Gomez, then proceeds to complete his hat trick two minutes later on a ball played forward by Farnsworth. Golob closes out the scoring just before the final whistle. Chiefs defensive tactics are excellent as Burnett is only called upon to make one difficult save for the entire match.

Chiefs shake off the rust from a two week layoff and serve notice that their Central Region ranking of 4th is for real with a convincing victory over the Cavaliers. Butta opens the scoring in the 6th minute after being presented an open net from a deflected cross. Five minutes later Cheatham adds to the Chiefs lead as Pugh chips to him at the far post. After the break, Cheatham tallies again in the 52nd minute, as his 20 yard free kick sneaks in low at the near post. Chiefs add three goals in the last ten minutes as T.J. Byrd scores twice on great individual effort, and Cheatham completes the hat trick on a breakaway. The run of play is much closer than the score in this match. Clover Hill creates quality scoring chances in both halves, but can not finish, as they are either denied by excellent Justin Burnett saves or fire wide of the net.

Chiefs suffer their first loss of the season at the hand of the Rapids. Play is even the first 15 minutes and then the Rapids begin to take control, earning several corners and free kicks for the remainder of the half. One minute before the break, Rapids score on a long set play that skips off of two players heads and goes in just under the bar. After the break, Chiefs fail to answer as the Rapids continue to have the advantage in the run of play. The Rapids score three goals in the last 6 minutes after the departure of keeper Justin Burnett due to injury.

MIDLOTHIAN
W 5-4
Unbelievable finish to one of the most exciting matches ever played at Monacan Stadium. The first 15 minutes sees play mostly in the Chiefs defensive third before the proceedings begin to even out. Trojans open the scoring in the 21st minute after a Chiefs defender slips at the top of the area. Cheatham answers in the 55th minute, running onto a ball played forward and streaking through three Trojan defenders to finish with the left boot from 12 yards. Trojans go back on top 10 minutes later as an attacker somehow makes contact on a corner played into a sea of Monacan defenders. In the 71st minute, Cheatham evens the match again as he drills in an unstoppable direct kick from 25 yards to the far upper corner. Trojans regain the lead two minutes later as a deflected shot finds an attacker at a wide open net. In the 76th minute, Midlothian seemingly puts the match out of reach as they score again and take a two goal advantage. But Chiefs don't quit, scoring two stoppage time goals to send the match into overtime. First Jones knocks in a failed clearance from 8 yards. Then just before the final whistle, Jones crosses from the right flank as Farnsworth rises high to head home from close range. Then finally, 8 minutes into overtime, Cheatham takes a direct kick just outside the top left corner of the area before the Trojans are totally set. His strike is perfectly placed low and just inside the far post, claiming an incredible victory for the Chiefs.

Neither team creates serious scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes before a well organized Titans team begins to take control. Butta is forced to make several difficult saves before Cosby gets on the score sheet in the 31st minute on a double header. Cosby tallies again two minutes later from close range. Then just before the halftime whistle, the Titan's pressure results in a Monacan "own goal" for a 3-0 lead. After the half, the Chiefs manage to threaten the Cosby goal on occasion, but without result. Failure to clear from the area in the 63rd minute leads to another Titan goal from close range. Cheatham gets the Chiefs on the scoresheet in the 79th minute as he bends a 25 yard direct kick low around the Titans wall and into the net. Justin Pugh's defending is outstanding for the match.

Chiefs dominate the first 20 minutes, creating several quality chances, but the finishing is off frame. L.C. Bird scores in the 24th minute an intended cross catches keeper Butta by suprise and floats in just under the bar. Chiefs draw level in the 36th minute as Clark assists Cheatham who deftly chips the keeper from 20 yards. After the break, the Chiefs take the lead as Stykemain heads in Cheatham's direct kick. In the 53rd minute, Cheatham gives the Chiefs a two goal margin as he buries a direct kick from 22 yards. In the 63 minute, Golob is fouled in the area, but Clark's PK hits the crossbar and is cleared away. With 15 minutes left, the Chiefs go a man down as Wallace is sent off for a challenge on the Skyhawk's keeper. L.C. Bird scores on a breakaway six minutes from time, but fail to threaten again.

The Rapids dominate the first half in possession and opportunities, as the Chiefs create few attacking chances. Butta makes a fine save in the 9th minute before the Rapid's goals come in the 17th and 30th minutes of play. Play evens out the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, then the Chiefs begin to take an advantage in the run of play. The Chiefs come close twice on a pair of headers saved well by the Rapids keeper. Then in the 66th minute, Cheatham plays a ball wide to Jones who crosses through the face of goal. The ball finds a charging Kyle Butta who finishes from close range. But the Rapids are able to finish out the match, as the Chiefs fail to create the equalizer. The play of Neil Raetz in defensive midfield is excellent for the 2nd half, and Patrick Glynn fills in well in the back.

Cavaliers shock the Chiefs in the first minute as a Monacan defender deflects a cross into the net for an "own goal". Clover Hill proceeds to dominate the first half, scoring again in the 22nd minute. The Chiefs come alive in the 49th minute as Golob challenges a defender for a bouncing ball in the area, which drops to Gomez who finishes low and hard into the net from 16 yards. In the 56th minute, Cheatham plays wide left to Farnsworth, who crosses back nicely to Clark for a fine finish from 12 yards. The game winner comes three minutes later, with Cheatham the architect again, as he plays a perfectly weighted ball between two Cavalier defenders. Farnsworth runs onto it to finish from 15 yards, just over the charging keeper and barely under the crossbar. The Cavaliers fail to answer as the Chiefs substitution pattern wears down another opponent in the 2nd half.

Postponed from 5/12. Chiefs performance improves dramatically versus their earlier match with the Titans, as excellent defending across the board leads to fairly even possesion for the match. Cosby comes close in the 4th minute as a shot from the left rattles off the far post. In the 11th minute, a Chief's cross is played to a wide open Butta in front of goal, but the ball eludes him after a minor deflection. Cosby strikes a minute later as an attacker gets in behind the central defense. After the break, a ball pings off a couple of Monacan defenders and falls perfectly to a Titan's foot for a finish from 10 yards. Chiefs tally in the 58th minute as Cheatham deflects in Clark's long free kick with his head from close range. Chief's almost equalize in the 70th minute as Jone's strike from 10 yards is parlayed wide by the Titan's keeper. Collins Youngblood fills in well between the pipes, coming out early on several occassions to thwart the Cosby attack.

Chiefs play well for the second night in a row but come up short again by a goal. Scoreless first half sees even and entertaining play, with the Trojans playing very direct, while Monacan is more patient in possession. The first goal does not come until the 76th minute as the Trojans persistent direct play finally results in an attacker in behind the defense. The lead is short lived as the Chiefs respond one minute later when Pugh heads home a Farnsworth corner. But the Trojans return the favor, scoring the game winner on a corner in the 80th minute.

The Chiefs played a great game against a tough Cosby team to a 0-0 draw last night. Both the Chiefs and the Titans moved the ball well in the first half but the strong defensive play of both teams limited the scoring chances on either side. The second half continued much like the first with both teams seeing limited scoring chances. The Chiefs defense stepped up to shut down a late push by the Titans with a great save by freshman GK, Matt Liston followed a few minutes later by sophomore captain, Brian Hogan clearing a hard shot off of the goal line to preserve the 0-0 draw.

The Monacan Chiefs added another win to their record with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Clover Hill Cavaliers. The Chiefs came out strong, creating several early scoring chances. Despite controlling the play for most of the first half, the Chiefs were unable to find the back of the net and went into halftime tied 0-0. Early in the second half the tie was broken when sophomore, Eric Warren beat the Cavalier keeper with a great shot on a free kick. The Cavaliers pushed the play forward to try to tie the game but the Chiefs defense stood strong. After a close call when a Cavalier free kick hit the crossbar, the Chiefs once again took control of the game and gave freshman goalkeeper, Matt Liston his fourth shutout of the season.
