16 at Dinwiddie W 5-4 Chris Duty pitches a great game and helps his own cause with a solo home run as Monacan wins it's exciting season opener 5-4. James Lawrence goes 2-3 with 2 doubles. Martin Lawrence registers his first save with a huge 7th inning strike out stranding the tying run on third.

Duty pitches two-hit ball thru the 6th inning and Gooch closes the game in the 7th. Monacan scores 4 times in the 4th with two-run homers from Jones and M. Lawrence. Other hitting highlights: McGuire, M.Lawrence, Duty and Clements bang out 2 hits apiece. Jones, Gooch and J.Lawrence one hit each.

23 ATLEE W 8-4 Monacan bats are quiet in the early innings. M. Lawrence pitches strong working out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the top of the 4th down by 2 runs. Monacan comes back from the 4-2 deficit, scoring 2 runs to tie the game in the 5th inning. Monacan takes the 4-4 tie into the bottom of the 6th inning and pushes 4 big runs across the plate. Minor opens the 6th with a base hit, he scores on a double by Jones. Duty follows with a 2 run hit and Gooch's with an RBI single. M. Lawrence works a strong 5 2/3 innings coming away with a no-decision. Duty pitches the final out in the 6th for the win. The game was called due to darkness.

28 HUGUENOT W 17-1 Monacan's first district win of the season is a slugfest. The #6 ranked Chiefs pound out 16 hits in the lopsided win. Monacan's overall record improves to 4-1.

30 at Manchester W 11-6 Monacan goes on the road to capture a 11-6 victory over Manchester. Duty pitches 5 strong innings for his 4th win of the season. Duty also was the hitting star of the game going 3-4 including a 2 run HR. The Lawrence brothers are instrumental in the win as well with James collecting 2 big hits and 3 RBI's. With Monacan leading 9-6, Martin Lawrence makes a terrific bases loaded 2-out running catch in the 5th inning to keep Manchester from scoring. Gooch pitches a very sharp 6th and 7th inning for the save.

  4 MIDLOTHIAN W 9-0 The Chiefs shutout arch rival Trojans as Martin Lawrence pitches 6 sharp innings of a 2-hit ball for the win. Gooch faced 3 batters in the 7th to close things out. The Chiefs batted around in the first inning scoring 6 runs against Midlo's hard throwing starter. Four of Monacan's eight hits were in the first inning. A Jones single, a Stehle double, a Lawrence walk, a Duty double and a Gooch single does the damage in the first. Monacan scores 3 more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 9-0.

  6 at James River L 2-1 A suberb Dominion District match-up saw the #2 ranked Chiefs give up a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning and go on to lose 2-1 to the #10 ranked Rapids. With the game tied, James River scores the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. In a superb pitching duel, Chris Duty was the hard luck loser tosing a 4-hitter.

  8 St. Christophers at L.C. Bird W 9-1 First round of the Skyhawk Invitational. Monacan looks to defend their 2005 championship. The Chiefs entertain the crowd with an impressive 9-1 victory over St. Christophers. Monacan scores in each of the first five innings. James Lawrence has a clutch 2-out double in the first inning to drive in 2 runs. Martin Lawrence pitches 6 innings scattering 7 hits for the win. Cooke pitches well to close out the 7th.

The Warriors rally with 6 runs in the final 3 innings to notch the win.

Evan Cooke pitches a perfect 6th and 7th inning. Ofensively, Brian Peggs breaks a 1-1 tie in the 4th with a solo HR and Monacan goes on to score 3 more times in the 4th. The Chiefs finish their scoring in the 6th with 3 additional runs; a Stehle double and a Duty HR doing most of the damage.

Monacan proceeds to score 7 runs in the second inning with 6 hits capped off with an Evan Stehle grand slam. M. Lawrence notches the victory by pitching four suberb innings with 4 K's and allowing only 3 hits. Cooke pitches the 5th and final inning to close out the game. Monacan's record is now 4-1 in the Dominion District.

The Chiefs score all of their runs in the 6th inning. Duty leads off the inning with a single followed by M. Lawrence's double, Gooch's ground ball RBI ties the game at one apiece. Clements follows with a game winning double to score 2 runs. Duty pitches a perfect 7th inning - striking out all 3 batters to capture the win.

  2 MANCHESTER W 8-7 Monacan hangs on for a 8-7 District win over Manchester. The Chiefs benefit from three 2nd inning walks to score 5 runs on only 2 hits. The big blows come from a 2-run double by Stehle and Minor's run scoring single, putting the Chiefs ahead 5-2. Monacan extends their lead to 8-3 in the 5th with base hits by Gooch and Minor. The Lancers answer with 2 runs in the 7th inning before Gooch is brought in to shut down their offense. Duty notches the win.

McGuire comes through with an RBI double to knock-in Jones and put the Chiefs out front. Monacan increases their lead to 3-1 in the second innning with Gooch and Clements base hits and another McGuire RBI. The Trojans score 4 in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.

  9 JAMES RIVER W 7-3 Monacan dumps James River 7-3. After being down 3-0 in the fourth inning, the Chiefs roar back scoring 7 runs over the next three innings. The major blow is a 3-run HR by Stehle. Duty goes the distance for the win saving his best stuff for the final innings.

11 at L.C. Bird W 7-4 Chiefs earn a huge win against L.C. Bird. In the second inning, McGuire doubles home Jones, Duty singles home McGuire and Gooch singles home Duty for a 4-1 lead. Duty's HR in the sixth inning gives the Chiefs a little breathing room. It was a team effort on the mound with M. Lawrence starting the game and he getting help from Gooch in the middle of the game and Duty, who pitches the final three innings for the save. Monacan leads the Dominion District with a 9-2 record with one game remaining.

16 CLOVER HILL W 1-0 Monacan clinches the Dominion District title with a 1-0 win over rival Clover Hill. This is the first district title since 1997 and guarantees the Chiefs will play in the regional tournament. Duty pitches a stellar 3-hit shut-out going the distance. The only run he needs comes in the bottom of the 6th inning. Stehle leads off with a sharp single to left and he is doubled home by a gapper off the bat of Gooch. These clutch hits were the only 2 of the game by Monacan.

  • 30 VARINA W 7-1 Central Region Tournament first round at MONACAN. Monacan advances to the semi-finals of Central Regional play with a 7-1 win over Varina. The Chiefs open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with back to back singles by McGuire and M. Lawrence. They are driven home by Stehle and Gooch respectfully. Three more runs come in the second, capped by a Peggs 2 run shot over the left centerfield fence. The Chiefs finish their scoring by starting the 4th inning with back to back walks by Jones and McGuire. M. Lawrence and Stehle both sacrifice with Stehle getting the RBI for the 7th run. Duty pitches 4 suburb innings, on only 31 pitches for the win. Gooch and M. Lawrence help finish off the Blue Devils over the next 3 innings.

      1 Douglas Freeman W 17-4 Central Region Tournament semifinals at Prince George. Monacan crushes the #1 ranked team, Douglas Freeman 17-4. The Chiefs score 4 runs in the first inning and keep on scoring. Jones leads off the first with a walk, McGuire folows with a base hit, Lawrence doubles and then Stehle hits a monsterous 3-run dinger. In the second, Jones leads off with a base hit, McGuire again follows with a single, M. Lawrence walks and then Stehle works his magic agian by doubling - 3 more RBI's. Up 7-1 the Chiefs score 5 in the third, 3 in fourth and two more in the fifth highligthed by 2 more RBIs from Stehle and a triple by Jones. The Chiefs score a season high 17 runs on 18 hits in an impressive offensive attack against the #1 ranked Rebels. Dominion District Player of the Year, Chris Duty, pitches an impressive 4 hitter for the win. Evan Cooke pitches the 7th to close out the game. The win earns Monacan a birth in the state tournament for the first time since 1989.

A seven run outburst in the 1st inning by Monacan buries Lake Braddock. Three walks, a single by M.Lawrence, a 2 RBI single by Gooch, single by J.Lawrence, base hit by Clements and a 2 RBI double by Jones caps the big inning. In the 4th, Stehle pounds a double in the gap for 2 RBI's. The Chiefs finish their scoring with tremendous opposite field HR by Stehle. Duty pitchces 5 shut out innings with M. Lawrence mopping up.

  •   9 Menchville W 6-5 State Tournament semifinals at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. The Chiefs knock-off previously undefeated Menchville to advance to the championship game. The Chiefs score 2 runs in the first with a lead off double by Jones followed by McGuire and Gooch singles. The 5th inning provides 3 more runs with back to back doubles by Stehle and Gooch followed by a 2 RBI single by J. Lawrence. Duty keeps the high powered Menchville offense at bay, scattering 8 hits for the win. The highlight of the game was in the bottom of the 7th with the scored tied 5-5, Gooch leads off with a walk and J. Lawrence rips the game winning RBI double.

  • 10 Oakton W 9-8 State Tournament Finals at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. CHIEFS WIN! CHIEFS WIN! Monacan captures the State Title with a 9-8 victory over Oakton. Jones leads off the game with a stand up triple and is driven home by McGuire. Monacan scores in each of the first 4 innings. In the 3rd, Stehle hits a 2 RBI double; in the 4th J. Lawrence has a 2 RBI single to complete the Monacan scoring. M. Lawrence pitches well for 4 innings and gets help from Gooch in the 5th & 6th with Duty closing the game, getting the final 4 outs.

  • Outlook:James River and Monacan figure to be playing the lead roles, although Midlothian may prove to be more than a supporting actor. Monacan will be tough with second-team All-Metro Chris Duty (9-2) on the mound and second-team All-Metro Evan Stehle (.474, 28 RBI) behind the plate.

Mitchell McGuire (Sr.) and Brant Jones (Jr.) are also named to the 1st team. Seniors Sam Gooch and Evan Stehle are named to the 2nd team. McGuire, Gooch, and Stehle are also All Academic. Coach Ben Bradford is named the Dominion District Coach of the Year.
    6/2/06: Senior Mitchell McGuire is one of the reasons for the Chiefs' success this year and is featured in the Times-Dispatch.

Peggs pitches the first 3 innings and goes 2-3 with 3 RBI including a 2-run HR. McCollum and Staib also go 2-3. Tizard and T. Montgomery each get one hit. Huntley scores 3 runs. McCollum, J. Tuzzo and Montgomery combine to pitch the final 3 innings, allowing no hits. Montgomery gets a strikeout to end the game with the tying run at second.
    17 at Matoaca W 13-3 Chiefs hold off a Matoaca rally in the bottom of the 7th then break open a 3-3 game in the top of the 8th inning, scoring 10 runs on 9 hits. The big blow is a bases-loaded triple by Peggs driving in 3 runs. Peggs gets 3 hits and 4 RBI for the game. S. Smith, Staib, Montgomery, Shaw and Tizard each get 2 hits. McCollum and J. Tuzzo each get one hit. Montgomery pitches a strong first 4 innings with 8 strikeouts. Melton and Shaw follow Montgomery each pitching well for 2 innings.
    20 at Thomas Dale L 12-2 Chiefs get only 4 hits in loss to Thomas Dale. The game is 0-0 into the bottom of the 4th. Thomas Dale scores all their runs in the 4th & 5th inning. T. Montgomery gets 2 hits for the Chiefs and J. Tuzzo & Peggs each get one hit.

Cam Shaw pitches very well going all 6 innings with 8 strikeouts. The Chiefs pull off a triple play in the top of the 4th. With runners at first & second, the Varina batter strikes out (1st out) on a ball in the dirt, the runner at second takes off for third, but is thrown out attempting to get back to second base (2nd out), and the runner at first is rundown attempting to return to first base (3rd out).

Tuzzo (1 RBI) & S. Smith add 1 hit each. Shaw starts on the mound for the Chiefs & is solid for the first 4 innings. McCollum finishes with 3 outstanding innings, allowing only 2 hits. The game ends in spectacular fashion as 1st baseman Robert Watts makes an over the shoulder, sliding catch of a foul pop up. Watts runs back to first base to finish off an unassisted double play.

The Rapids push across the winning run on a double & an error in the bottom of the 8th. The hitting was led by Blankenship with 4 hits & 3 RBIs, followed by Huntley with 3 hits & 3 RBIs. The Skyhawks tie the score 6-6 in the sixth and the score remains tied until the ninth when the Skyhawks plate 4 runs for the final margin of victory. The Chiefs' hitting is led by Shaw & J. Tuzzo with 3 hits each. Blankenship, McCollum & Montgomery - 2 hits each. Tizard- 1 hit. The Chiefs record falls to 8-8 overall & 3-7 in district play.
