CLOVER HILL (No. 2 in region) |
W 3-2 |
No. 1-ranked Chiefs win a tough come-from-behind five-game playoff for the regular-season championship. Aaron Smith and Hudson Bates lead the way over the No. 2 Cavaliers. Win gives Monacan the No. 1 seed in the district tournament and, more important, an automatic spot in the Central Region championships that follow.
This was the fourth matchup this season for the two best teams in the region (and two of the best in the state), including the early-season Ukrop's tournament. Chiefs have now won three. All have been great battles and the possibility exists for up to three more.

Monacan is already in next week's Region tournament as the Dominion District's No. 1 team, while Clover Hill is in as the Dominion's No. 2.

Semifinals, Central Region tournament.
Region's top-ranked Chiefs struggle in a must-win match before pulling out the win. Monacan dropped the first game, took the second, then took the final two in nail-biters. Loss would have ended Chiefs' season. Win assures them of one of four spots in next week's state championships.
Win first advances Monacan to the regional finals against -- suprise! -- No. 2-ranked Clover Hill, which defeated No. 3-ranked Hermitage 3-0. It will be the sixth meeting this season for the region's top two teams. Monacan has won four of previous five, though most have been close.

Clover Hill (No. 2 in region) at Manchester |

Finals, Central Region tournament.
No. 1 ranked Monacan continues its pattern of starting slow against No. 2 Clover Hill but also continues its pattern of finishing strong, adding the Central Region championship to its Dominion District championship.
Clover Hill take a 9-1 lead in the first game on the way to a 15-6 win, but the Chiefs come back to win the next three almost as easily. Aaron Smith and Hudson Bates lead the Chiefs (22-1) in winning its fifth of six matchups against the Cavaliers (19-5). Neither team has lost to anyone but each other. "It's easy to think they're a two-man team, but they have a lot of depth," Clover Hill coach Steve Eliasek tells the Times-Dispatch afterward. "They showed it tonight, and they've showed it to us five times. They've truly earned the championships they've won."
(Richmond Times-Dispatch article, Nov. 8: 'Monacan just two good: Smith, Bates lead title run'.)
Next for both teams: the four-team state championships with the top two teams from the Eastern Region.

Tallwood at Atlee H.S. Group AAA State Semifinals |
W 3-2 |
Chiefs take the first game of the state semifinals. But Tallwood (of Virginia Beach), the Eastern Region runnerup, comes back to take the next two in close wins. Facing elimination, Monacan rallies to win the final two games behind the play of Central Region Player of the Year Aaron Smith and fellow first-team All-Central Region player, Hudson Bates.
"The second and third games, we really weren't moving our feet," Monacan coach Bill Reeves told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "That's how they were beating us. Somewhere in the fourth game the light went on with our defense and with getting our feet moving. It was awesome."
Win advances Chiefs to the state championship vs. Great Bridge (of Chesapeake), the Eastern champion. A win by Monacan would be the Chief's second state championship, following one in 1998.

Great Bridge at Atlee H.S. Finals, Group AAA State Championships |

STATE CHAMPIONS!
Monacan's power proves too much for Great Bridge (of Chesapeake) Saturday as the Chiefs come back from a one-game deficit to win the state championship, 11-15, 15-11, 17-15, 15-8. Monacan also won the title in 1998.
Game matched the two region's players of the year: Aaron Smith of Monacan in the Central and Jeff Kubichan of the East. Once again, Chiefs fell behind, losing the first game. They came back to take an 11-6 lead in the second game behind Smith and fellow first-team All-Central Region player, Hudson Bates. But the Great Bridge rallied to tie it at 11 before Monacan pulled it out. Third game was a classic. Chiefs built a 5-0 lead but Great Bridge came back to catch them. Game went back and forth, neither team able to pull away, most serves ending without a score. Great Bridge finally took a 14-12 lead but could not put away the Chiefs. Chiefs eventually won 17-15. The game seemed to drain the Great Bridge, who fell behind 1-8 in the finale and eventually lost 8-15. Both teams finished season with 24-1 records.
